Arizona Chickens

Hello Nurseshelly! I'm in Gilbert too and just whining to have chicken insired peeps to have coffee with some weekend. I have 4 pullets (I hope!) that should start laying Mid April. They were sold as americaunas but pretty sure they are mutts. 2 have beards and rumps and 2 have no beards and no rumps either. We shall see!

What makes you guess Mid-April? We have some that hatched in September, and I can't wait for them to start laying. We only have 2 layers, and they aren't so good. We get about 6 eggs a week, and that isn't enough for a family of 7. I am tired of buying 2 dozen cage free eggs a week and then going home and feeding our 7 chickens!

Hi Mclevinson,
Lets do coffee together and gush about our baby chickens!!!! That would be so fun! Mine are only 3 weeks old so it will probably be at least 5 months before we have eggs. But we are having soooo much fun with the chicks! I got my two Mille Fleur Bantams ... so I'm up to 6 total. The bantams are straight run though, so I'm so hoping I get one hen at least. Ivy (my Chochin) is really picking on one of the bantams ... right now they are doing fine, I know the pecking order has to get re-established, but keeping fingers crossed they will sleep tight tonight and be happy together tomorrow. It does kind of make me worry that Ivy is a roo, and the one bantam is a roo ... just weird that Ivy only picks on the one. If I have to I'll just put up another brooder for a while (have many rubber maids - LOL!

That did not take very long! Better get your hubby on the treadmill. Heart attacks will be plentiful because you can't hold back! I for example am already in the process of having three times the chickens I had planned (I started last fall). Loads of people here have that "problem".

Gallo,
I could not resist! I went in the workshop today and found some leftover 1/2 inch plywood

... that was the end of the story. Almost done with the feeder. Of course I had to do domestic stuff as well today

. By the end of the weekend I will have a functioning gallo-feeder.

BTW I checked out your site. That coop of yours!

Absolutely amazing! Mine is not anywhere near that beautiful. The only advantage mine has is that it is built to house a small raging dinosaur. In other words it is bomb, earthquake and probably hurricane proof. Very sturdy

ca,

how do you like your anconas? are they laying yet? what is their temperment? they are on my "list" but sadly, i am out of room at the inn. and the shop builder is on strike! i already tried bribery, it won't work.

Hi Ca,
Ummm, I decided to just get it over with and let him be unhappy for a few hours

I did have to drive all the way to Pratts from Gilbert to get them ... took such a long time, but worth it! They only had two, so if I waited too long I would have to wait for them to get more. I'll get pictures up tomorrow, if they are all settled in

Hi ,I just joined up yesterday. Thanks for the warm welcome!
We are in Buckeye.
We have some nice coops--But the other night 2 jack russel terriers tore the fence AND burrowed under it.

We got it on game cams,so can identfy them IF I can find them.
darn things killed my 4 welsummer roos and 3 hens out of 14.
They were going on 7 months old, almost laying age!
My husband has reinforced the bottom of that pen and we put in a baby monitor.
It works great and its cool to hear the birds in the house. The pens are about 450 ft away.
Does anyone in Az have a nice welsummer roo they would part with? MY girls NEED a boy

Hi Azwelshponygirl,
I'm so sorry to hear about your chickens!!!!

We had a dog attack our bunnies one time (not at this house) by tearing through the wood fence. It pulled apart some of the hardware cloth, but couldn't get all of the way in so they started attacking the bunnies feet. They got into their food bowels to get away from the dog. We never had a problem with dogs again though ... so maybe you won't either.
