Arizona Chickens

Good luck to everyone trying to save plants.  This weather is so unusual.  I don't know if I remember such a long stretch of temperatures so low here in Tucson.   It was 21 at 5 am this morning, much lower than forecasted.

27 here in Tempe this morning...

Not only did I cover the pipes... I have the citrus trees on a drizzle for two days... I move the hose all around the width of the tree..
We run it especially durring the night..
I hear it helps in prevention of loosing the fruit... Don't know yet. hope to find out in the next few days..
I for got to pick off the fruit...

Oh, I wanted to tell everyone about the most incredible thing that happened last night.  Right before midnight we got a telephone call that woke us from a sound sleep.  It was someone calling to tell us that they found Rocket!  They had just seen him crossing Speedway Blvd, saw his reflective collar and knew that he was out of place and needed help.  They stopped and called to him and being the awesome cat he is, he went right up to them.  They found our contact information on his tag.   We can't believe he survived those six days of wandering.  Where he was found he would have had to  have crossed six lanes of Broadway, four lanes of Alvernon, six lanes of Speedway and all of the smaller roads in the two miles that he had travelled.  We suspect he was chased far by the coyote and got lost.   We've all been so terribly sad since he went missing and then lost the chickens; we were so overjoyed at his return that we couldn't hardly sleep.  I also keep thinking about that kind young couple that went out of their way to help and refused anything in return.  Such good and decent people.
That is truly a blessing... So good to hear.. Rocket is really a fast cat, to be able to escape a coyote...
He needs a super hero cat cap... With a big "R". ;)

quote name="AZKat" url="/t/31227/arizona-chickens/33270#post_10276074"]I've had good luck using a milk crate for a nesting box as well.

Gallo, I'm so happy to hear about your cat being found safely.

The chickens are doing fine, I put some extra straw in the coop, and the cold isn't bothering them at all.  I've been using supplemental light, and I'm getting five or six eggs a day out of eight laying hens, which is pretty good.  My plants seem to be handling the cold ok.  The leaves on the passion fruit vine are a little cold nipped, but there doesn't seem to be any other damage to the vine, and that is the most delicate plant I have.  My orange tree was still putting out new growth, which is now starting to yellow, which isn't terribly worrying, and it seems to be doing ok other than that.

In other news, I had my 'big' ultrasound, and I found out that I'm having a girl! I'm really excited, and also kind of nervous, because its going to be a a big change after 3 boys.  Everything else looked really good as far as her development, which I was very happy and relieved to find out.  Related to that, if anyone knows someone who needs boy clothes, size Newborn through 24 months, let me know.  I just finished going through my baby clothes, and pulling out all the clothes that are just too boyish to put on a little girl.

Congrats on your healthy baby...

Congrats AZKat!!! I was so excited when I found out I had a girl (didn't know until they placed her in my arms... I like surprises) after having 2 boys. So much fun to do all the girl things! It is a different experience but you will love it!

What a great story and what a smart (or lucky) kitty to avoid being hit by traffic. I'm glad you got him back. Did he look skinny?

He's a smart cat, but his life has also been pretty darn lucky. He sure did lose weight too.

Got a call from Duane Urch today. My black java chicks have shipped!

Looks like I got the brooder cobbled together just in time. Good thing I've been testing brooder heating systems over the last couple of days. Paint will have to wait until the chicks are grown out. At least it will be warmer then!

I'm hoping they have a safe trip! Let us know what happens.

18.7 degrees right now.

I hope my chicks will be all right when I get them... (They're staying in my bedroom. Yes, they are. Hubby doesn't like the idea much, but oh, well.) I decided I'm going to get day old chicks from Shoppers Supply in AJ. They're nice people. Congratulations on your baby! I had some baby girl clothes, but after my niece was born, I gave it all to her. There was some cute clothes my aunt made for me! Anyways, thank you everyone for the nesting box ideas! I'l have to try them all out. Hmmm... I have another question regarding coop construction. What is best for the floor of the run? Dirt, sand, gravel, etc.? I have no idea. Thanks all!
