Arizona Chickens

I gave the girls the left over pulp from organic oranges.. A neighbor has moved out & has not picked their tree..
We benefit from their loss.. We also share with the other neighbors..
The girls could not get enough... They even came back & tried to drink the left over juice on the plate..
We did read that it is not good, however others here on the Fourm say it is ok..
I won't give them to much at a time...

I go out and cut at least four oranges in half every afternoon and give them to the chickens. Next morning, the flesh is gone, nothing but the rind is left. They like grapefruits even more. When they were younger they would go for my fingers. I guess they thought I wouldn't let it go. Now they wait for me to put them down. Silly birds.

Chicken fatality tonight.

Hey don't forget to look for these little creatures... Hey has anyone talked to mikey D?? Miss his imput.. Got home around 7:30 tonight from the in-laws like we do every Sunday and I went out to check on the hens. Our little bichon-poodle came out of their run area and I didn't really think anything about it since he's always snooping around back their sniffing their food. I looked in the coop and only counted eight. The four pullets had just been introduced to the coop this week so I just thought she decided to sleep somewhere else. I looked behind the coop and I could see a wet messy chicken. I just thought what a silly chicken or at worst one of the older girls bullied her out of the coop. I walked around the other side to get to her and put her in the coop when I discovered her back feathers were gone and I couldn't tell for sure but it looked like broken skin. I went and got my flashlight in the house and noticed the same dog was all muddy and bloody. I shined the flashlight on the hen and confirmed the worst. My wife wanted to see and she just started crying. I picked her up and put her out in the open under our flood lights and she just struggled and didn't have much energy. The wife completely lost it and I told her to go in the house. Then I had to do something that I just wasn't prepared to do. I've never had to cull a bird before and this was an egg-layer not a meat bird. She kicked and flapped her wings once or twice and it was over. I know it's the circle of life but I am so mad at that dog. Like I said I wasn't prepared to do that tonight or at all on that bird. It was one of our RIR but I couldn't tell which one (Ginger or Sweetie). So now we are down to eight total and Charlie the dog is grounded from the chickens.

That's a tadpole shrimp. They sprout from eggs in the dirt and grow in puddles after rain.

billiam i am sorry to hear about your chicken, i lost 3 chicks to my moms dog (its a maltese, i thought those things were so sweet!) its so heart wrenching because you love them both...
i almost hate to say, but my grandma would beat a dog with the dead chicken to train them. we did that and she hasnt killed any since. i really did not enjoy it, but it sure worked. one of those OT things...

update on my flock. i had just integrated my chicks to the big coop and left the light in a corner for them so they would stay comfortable in this strange weather. i really should have removed the light, they are fully feathered. well, i learned that lesson the hard way. i have no idea when the light blew, when i noticed it was already dark and my babies were sleeping right in the deep litter on top of the broken glass! i put in a different light and moved them to the roost, cleaned up the largest pieces of glass, then took the light away... i just wanted them to use the roost since it was a new idea for them and that light helped them get comfy.
thank you all for the idea to scrape the top layer, in my panic i never would have thought of that and it worked great. i just hope there wasnt too much damage already done. i cant see anything on these muddy birds. and 3 are brahmas so its just a mess.
hopefully they will roost tonight instead of huddle in the deep litter, that stuff is starting to get so messy with them tracking all the mud around.\

*sigh

gallo, about the cord cover thats where i am really upset! i helped a friend in payson make one last month for her coop using a water bottle and duct tape. i know how to be safe, i just wasnt! and it didnt even happen on the first day of rain, i should have realized and got my butt out there. i am so frustrated with myself!!
