Arizona Chickens

Was such a nice day today. The chicks went outside to play and be chickens. No more living in the house. Tonight is their first night "away from home". They are living with the silkies for now.

Almost 8 week old Blue Marans

This one has lots of copper on it's neck.

The whole gang!!
My B/B/S Orpington barely has a tail. Still trying to figure out roo or pullet

Miss Sophie my BA (2.5 yrs old) came right over and hung out with the chicks as if they were hers. And they took to her as soon as they saw her.

How many silkies does it take to hatch an egg?

And for something to laugh at. The black silkie had her egg stuck to her and was walking around with it. Silly girl.
LOVE your pics and chicks!! I have 4- 3 1/2 weekers that will go out to the outside brooder with a lamp at one end tomorrow...much more room to romp and learn. The Silkies are adorable...so true on the broody bunch...the egg bottom is hilarious...nice size for a Silkie too (-; Thanks for sharing!!

Sonoran Silkies: I sent them an email, and they offered to let me exchange the tree, if it was still being grown in a container, or get 50% off of a second tree, if it had been planted. Although I'm still a bit disappointed about the tree, I am very pleased with the customer service.

OK... all THREE of my W/C Black Polish are roos.
Two of the three WC Blue Polish are roos.
One of the three Buff Laced Polish are roos.
Jury is still out on the lone Sultan and the four Silver Laced Polish.

Anyone in need of polish roos? They'll be 3 months next week.

I'll also have available a Wheaten Marans roo.... and eventually a couple of Blue Wheaten Ameraucana and a Wheaten Ameraucana roos.

"Small numbers of hatchings play havoc on expected percentages. " quote from Sonoran Silkies. Important to keep this in mind.

Silkie rooster over Serama NN. It is very difficult to find a NN "pure" or have both copies of NN especially when they are already are silkie mix.

katekamper I was being conservative in my percentages. I think the MYSTERY BREED is Serama/OEGB after seeing more pictures. Tail is held low

My tiny Serama/NNs

Ms Rosa and her best buddy !

This is Spunky Sparky she is the Mom of the silkie mix. As tiny as she is I have seen her mated by a hugh NN. "NO PRoblem"

Yay! I finally got rid of both the dogs last night. They've been up on Craig's List for about two weeks with a rehoming fee, but there were no takers. The Shepherd decided to break out of his kennel the other day and destroy our room, so I posted in the free section that I needed them gone this weekend. I had two contacts before the flagging police had the ad removed. The guy that took them was extremely nice, albeit a bit slow mentally. In my experience, though, those are the types that take the best care of animals. He has a plot of land up at the I-17 and Loop 303 with a couple hephers, chickens and such. He has about a dozen chickens he doesn't want, so he said he'll probably drop them off to me, since he found out I already have some. Supposedly, they are the larger layers and he wants small bantams instead. I'm assuming they'll be roos, so I'm guessing I'll be at a full weekend of processing here shortly, assuming they check out ok.

I don't know their condition, health or anything, so I really have to look in to the fine details of the biosecurity. How far away from my coop do I need to keep them? Can they share the same yard at different times of the day and be ok? What exactly do I need to look for? It's time to break out the DE and wood ash to make sure they get a good dust bath or three. I much prefer taking in the day old or week old chicks versus adults.

On another positive note, though, I have a friend who is going to meet with Marcia this coming week and bring me a couple of black copper marans! They were the first breed I really, really wanted, but they are just so much harder to get here in Phoenix. I may have to find out about pulling off keeping a rooster and start selling the fertile eggs and/or let my wife start a hatching party. All in all, it's been a good start to the weekend. Last day of work today, too.

Oh, and I finally built the ramp leading in to the coop. So now the Silkies can come and go as they please, too. They've been jumping down to go forage, but couldn't get back in.

Happy Sunday everyone!

We love Tropica Mango! We were there just yesterday to survey all they had and ended up bringing home a apple cocktail tree. Finally I found a nursery owner/worker that was both knowledgeable and not a salesman. We asked several questions and he gave all the answers. I even ended up with a theory for the Dorsette not dropping it's leaves. Sorry about your grapefruit tree but what a great idea to go get another tree!
