They are so adorable! Here is my Serama Chicks! Have 3 eggs left but hold no hope. Love the colors but have no idea what they will be! The last picture. Toy Boy and Holly Berry have been moved outside now awaiting these little ones to form their flock. I may keep two girls inside tho! Toy became to loud in his crowing for others that live in the house.![]()

I have found that when chicks grow up together, including silkie roosters they are rather tolerant of other males. As far as hens for the silkies, roosters do not discriminate on who they mate. Now if you are planning on keeping them in seperate areas with free ranging that changes the picture.
Are you near Olsen's Feed Store or any other big feed store. They will have silkies just in case.
You know, I was so busy thinking about my chicks and coop, I totally missed the reference.![]()
I was hoping someone would get it, eventually! In the meantime it created an interesting conversation about bats.![]()
One of my favorite bats is Centurio senex. We were mist-netting for bats in Costa Rica the first time I ever saw one. It has a face only a mother could love...or a bat lover. Oddly enough, it has a flap of skin that it can move up to cover it's face, at will.
Yes but if you do not want to eat chickens with tons of chemical additives, including maybe arsnic, you may get used to raising you own source of meat. Everyone has trouble doing things that are unpleasant initially. BTW did you call and complain just because you should.I am going to try to keep the silkie roos for sure then and see how it goes... And yes, Olsen's is right down the street but I think they are only carrying straight run silkies so I might have to do an order through somewhere like My Pet Chicken who sex their silkies if I want to make sure to get hens, I guess. If the roos don't care about having more than 1 silkie hen, then I might as well just get full-size hens for the full-size eggs. I plan on keeping all my chickens in the same run and I do let them free-range on occasion under supervision. So, we'll just see how it goes I guess. I would like to keep my EE roo too and maybe if I can squeeze a few more hens into my run safely, there will be enough girls. I still feel terrible about having to eat my roos. I didn't want to have to do this, which is why I was so adamant about no males in my order.![]()
Oh, and a question for all you gardeners... Now that the dogs are gone, my wife wants her garden even more. What is a good size to start with? It'll be a raised bed, along the pool fence. That'll allow me to easily put in a trellis for vine plants. I was thinking 2'x6'?

My first chicken order was back in 1996 from McMurrays, 25 straight run. I got 19 roosters and 6 hens. Most of the roosters were given to a co worker whose husband was a hunter and was happy to do the work for his family.
Whatever size you make it, it won't be big enough. Kind of like chicken coops...Oh, and a question for all you gardeners... Now that the dogs are gone, my wife wants her garden even more.
