Arizona Chickens

Here is my Serama Chicks! Have 3 eggs left but hold no hope. Love the colors but have no idea what they will be! The last picture. Toy Boy and Holly Berry have been moved outside now awaiting these little ones to form their flock. I may keep two girls inside tho! Toy became to loud in his crowing for others that live in the house.

They are so adorable!

I have found that when chicks grow up together, including silkie roosters they are rather tolerant of other males. As far as hens for the silkies, roosters do not discriminate on who they mate. Now if you are planning on keeping them in seperate areas with free ranging that changes the picture.
Are you near Olsen's Feed Store or any other big feed store. They will have silkies just in case.

I am going to try to keep the silkie roos for sure then and see how it goes... And yes, Olsen's is right down the street but I think they are only carrying straight run silkies so I might have to do an order through somewhere like My Pet Chicken who sex their silkies if I want to make sure to get hens, I guess. If the roos don't care about having more than 1 silkie hen, then I might as well just get full-size hens for the full-size eggs. I plan on keeping all my chickens in the same run and I do let them free-range on occasion under supervision. So, we'll just see how it goes I guess. I would like to keep my EE roo too and maybe if I can squeeze a few more hens into my run safely, there will be enough girls. I still feel terrible about having to eat my roos. I didn't want to have to do this, which is why I was so adamant about no males in my order.

You know, I was so busy thinking about my chicks and coop, I totally missed the reference.

I was hoping someone would get it, eventually! In the meantime it created an interesting conversation about bats. :)

One of my favorite bats is Centurio senex.  We were mist-netting for bats in Costa Rica the first time I ever saw one.  It has a face only a mother could love...or a bat lover.   Oddly enough, it has a flap of skin that it can move up to cover it's face, at will.

So fantastic :weee BAT people. Mostly I here kill them all. I had bat houses up on my house. My boy friend took them down. He was afraid of them and wanted of killing them. Oh did I say my X-boy friend.
Not to long ago I caught a very tiny bat trapped in a doorway. It would have been a matter of minutes before the pure thing would be in full afternoon Arizona sun. All I had were work gloves, the soft yellow leather kind. I was hopping his teeth would be to small to go thru them. I caught him as I would one of my budgies. With the head held between two fingers. I put him in a box, when it got dark I released him from the same location. No idea what kind of bat, someday my lack of knowledge is going to get me hurt. There was no time to look it up, and I-pads were a ways off yet.

Yes but if you do not want to eat chickens with tons of chemical additives, including maybe arsnic, you may get used to raising you own source of meat. Everyone has trouble doing things that are unpleasant initially. BTW did you call and complain just because you should.

My first chicken order was back in 1996 from McMurrays, 25 straight run. I got 19 roosters and 6 hens. Most of the roosters were given to a co worker whose husband was a hunter and was happy to do the work for his family.

Oh, and a question for all you gardeners... Now that the dogs are gone, my wife wants her garden even more. What is a good size to start with? It'll be a raised bed, along the pool fence. That'll allow me to easily put in a trellis for vine plants. I was thinking 2'x6'?

If you are interested I can send you plans fot a T-frame garden bed. Look at my profile. PM me if you wish. You do not have to use my bedding, it works with soil as well.

I am excited about getting fresh, healthy meat. I just am dreading my first kill... Right now I only eat organic chicken which is very pricey so from what I see from other's numbers on here the price per pound is much better when we butcher our own chickens rather than trying to buy the expensive chicken from the health food store. I haven't bought any meat from a regular grocery store in a really long time! This Spring I am going in on a 1/4 grass fed cow with some friends. That will be nice!

I plan on calling tomorrow and see what can be done - if nothing else, they have definitely lost my business. Their 90% accuracy rate did not even come close with my order.

Whatever size you make it, it won't be big enough. Kind of like chicken coops...
