Arizona Chickens

I got a pullet egg today! I think that its Faith, my Barnvelder X California White pullet, since the Olive Egger isn't quite old enough to be laying. Its a beautiful addition to the egg basket, sort of a cafe au lait color.

I got a pullet egg too! It's blue/green. It's the EE I thought might be a rooster. Turns out she was just developing faster.

Finally some color in my egg basket.

Yes one can use plastic sheeting, but in that case there would be allot of wind resistance and the first big monsoon or dust devil would likely destroy it with the 1/2 inch PVC frame so a much sturdier frame of say 1-1/2 PVC would be better. We use the thin stuff for the netting and it is on there even though almost invisible because it will flex with the wind and the netting offers little if any wind resistance so it blows right through. Have had a dust devil take a couple lengths apart, but we just snap them back together since we do not glue them. Also the whole setup cost less than 150.00 when we did it.... The netting is amazingly strong and lasts for years even in the AZ sun.

Like having room to stand fully when moving around inside...
My neighbor's raised beds have a 1/2" pvc frame and have had the same clear plastic sheeting for years. Netting will not hold in heat to extend the growing season, which was the question.

Southern Desert,
I am so very sorry. Big

to you and your family in this very trying time. May God surround you all with his compassion. May he grant wisdom and knowledge to your wife's doctors.

Today I I noticed that Clare's skin around her eyes, the flesh at the corners of her beak and the sadle over her beak and nostrils are becoming a bright rouge color. Only the tip of her comb ware it melts into the sadle is brighter, ware as the comb itself is the same as it has been. Vony and Miss Pearl (Pecker, named not by me) are also showing brighter color. The picture is of Clare, it is washed out by the flash, still some of the rouge red comes through. If I remember correctly, bright color is a good thing, sign of health and associated with laying eggs???? or am I grabbing at straws? They are on a fermented feed, but still the chick mash. They get squash, veggies, sunflower seeds, assorted meat scraps, yard scratching s and a whole bunch of other stuff, I believe they have a good diet. I have supplemented their FF with a sprinkling of oyster shell.
