Thank City. I just point and shoot. I have great subjects and little ones are very quick. Have to take lots of pics to get a few good ones. My little duckie is speedy, I think faster than chicks. You will have so much fun snapping pics of your girlies. Just keep the camera with you at all times. Can't wait to see pics.

Maybe I'll talk to Reevis Mountain about getting some jujubes to try. I wonder if chickens like them?

Tropica Mango in AJ. They carry all the interesting stuff that you wouldn't find at the other nurseries. Some say they tend to be a bit expensive but i like the idea of bringing home trees that are already old enough to be producing. If they don't have it they can order it for you although it might be just as easy to order it and have it delivered to your door. I believe they get some of there stuff from Willis Orchards. A lot of their stuff they start themselves. It's not your typical style of nursery either, only one guy running the show. I haven't had a question yet that he didn't have a good answer/suggestion for.

Yes! Just in time is right! I am 'adopting' AZ Kat's Aloha, and another of her's, too, so we should have eight when the coop is done!

I just heard the chickens making a commotion and looked out my bedroom window to see a coyote trying to get at them.

I sent the dog after it, which made her day.

So i need some help! I ordered 10 chicks from Ideal and sadly all of them except three of the filler males died within 24 hours. I called the woman there to ask for a re-shipment and she began to be very rude by telling me that i was a horrible caretaker and that i should never own chicks in my life. The sad part is that i could not figure out what was wrong and the hatchery was closed. So after being yelled at, i asked for my money back instead and was told that i was ridiculous and annoying. So now i will never again order from Ideal Poultry. But now i need chicks! Where is a good and reliable place for chicks? Thanks, Bryce

That is horrible! And terrible customer service! Tho I will say the PO from TX is terrible; I had 20 chicks shipped in Dec and due to PO delays only 6 arrived alive and three of those were at deaths door. One died later.

I know lots of us are hatching; I just put some in the incubator, tho plan on keeping them for me, I will be hatching easter eggers and olive eggers for sale soon. I had a wonderful morning! After a very long night of my 10-month old not sleeping well, I went out to let the girls free range, only to find a single egg in the coop. It's the very first and was sitting just outside the nesting box. So I scooped it up and noticed that the nesting box had a nice big place snuggled in to it. I figured it just didn't come out as easily as she expected... It was 47g and I think it was laid by my larger of my Barred Rocks, Christine.

So, as I'm finishing getting the girls ready for school, I hear one of them out there making a huge ruckus. I go over to the coop and Sleepy is in the nesting box raising the dead. I figured she noticed her egg was missing and was ****** off... Sorry for all the background noise. I couldn't get outside fast enough.

Shortly after, I took my girls to school. They were late five times this last quarter and nobody told me about it, so I'm biking and they are running. Gotta teach them the responsibilities of being on time. When I got home, I went to get their dish for the fermented feed, only to find a second egg, in the nesting box this time!!! It weighed in at 39g, so I'm thinking it was the smaller Barred Rock, Sleepy. None of the others are old enough. The Silkies are about 8 weeks and the Black Copper Marans are only about four weeks.

And to make it sweeter, it's two days before I leave for my hunting trip. I'll be gone for nine days, so I easily could have missed this all! Woohoo! I thought they'd never start... Oh, and they are significantly quieter this morning than they have been the last few days. Guess they were warning us...​

More snow coming in tonight after some beautiful sunny days so I'm sure all will be quiet around here for a couple days. Snow days are sooo quiet in the mornings... no quacking from my ducks and no crowing from the roosters. They all just sleep in. Arizona has such interesting weather. Yesterday I was working in the coop with a t-shirt on (and sweating!) and tonight it will be snowing.

If I sent my dog out after a coyote it would make her dinner.

That's why I keep a loaded "coyote deterrent" by the back door.

e   How exciting!  Alright, now I'm very curious about persimmons, especially since you said they were your favorite.  I tried a couple types of persimmons from Sunflower Market last summer for the first time and both were not so good--very astringent if I recall.  Perhaps they weren't properly ripened?  Why are they your favorite?

I got them from the Asian markets.
American grocery produce doesn't tend to be as good..Including exotic stuff.
I once saw a dragon fruit at whole foods for $11 or $14!
They're half that at the Asian market. And so yummy, like kiwi.

I like the fuyu persimmons.  They are non-astringent and you can eat them peel and all just like a crunchy apple.  They have a very unique taste but I crave them.  My first taste of persimmons was from Reevis Mountain Farm.  I order a flat from them every year and eat most of all of them myself!  I haven't been able to find good persimmons in the grocery stores although I hear that Lee Lee's here in Chandler has them in the Fall.

If you can, try to make it to Mekong on Dobson in Mesa... I think it's on the corner of Broadway? If you go north on Dobson you cant miss it on the left with the Chinese style buildings and tons of different Asian restaurants. Its pretty cool set up like a little Asian mall if you're into cultural excursions.

Or the Chinese Ranch Market on 44th st (which will definitely have persimmons most of the year), south of the 202, they also have amazing Asian pastries at the 44th st one.

Idk if they're the eating the skin type, the last time I had one was almost 4 years ago!

Both markets close at 9.

Lee Lee's is overpriced and it stinks really bad... I mean most Asian markets smell like fish, but Lee Lee's smells like something died compared to the other markets.


There are a lot of little mom and pop grocers all over but it takes some looking to find them. We know of about 5 Middle Eastern ones and one Japanese lol.
I actually prefer to buy my groceries at the 44th st market just because their produce tastes better than the regular store (plus its cheaper).
Obviously its a drive, so we only get to stop there if we're visiting MIL or FIL who live in the Arcadia area of phoenix.



Sorry for blabbing, I kind of get excited when I see something I can put input into or relate to since I can't have chickens yet
