Arizona Chickens

So i need some help! I ordered 10 chicks from Ideal and sadly all of them except three of the filler males died within 24 hours. I called the woman there to ask for a re-shipment and she began to be very rude by telling me that i was a horrible caretaker and that i should never own chicks in my life. The sad part is that i could not figure out what was wrong and the hatchery was closed. So after being yelled at, i asked for my money back instead and was told that i was ridiculous and annoying. So now i will never again order from Ideal Poultry. But now i need chicks! Where is a good and reliable place for chicks? Thanks, Bryce

I had a terrible experience with Ideal as well, although I've heard a lot of people have done just fine ordering from them. The ducks I ordered last year were dead or died within a couple hours of arriving so I ended up getting new ducklings from Metzers, which were wonderful!  All the chicks from Ideal survived but were incorrectly sexed and when I paid extra to have all pullets, I ended up with 7 roosters and only 5 hens!! I also was not treated nicely on the phone regarding the dead ducks but they did recently give me all my money back for all the roosters. However, I will not order from them again... this time I am going local. We have Olsen's Grain here and also Cal-Ranch and neither one of them use Ideal as their hatchery supplier. Everyone I've talked to that have purchased from either place has been very happy and has only ended up with one rooster every now and then. So... pretty good sexing accuracy. Where are you located in Arizona? Depending on where you are, people will be able to suggest good places to pick up chicks.
Also, could you share what you did once the chicks arrived? Were you able to get them from the post office as soon as they arrived there and immediately get them under a heat lamp with food and water? Not saying you did anything wrong - just wondering if they sat too long in transit or something?

Put in on "yelp", I check that app to see if a Sevice or business is any good. Tell others.

I am a little late to respond on an earlier post but thought I would add my 2 cents anyway.....I bought my Jujube tree Lowe's. They get them in certain times of the year. It produces loads of fruit that taste similar to apples. I have a Plumelo tree. It is a great producer. It is like a sweet grapefruit, no sugar needed. I also have 2 apple trees. They give ton's of apples, so much that I have to support the branches so they don't break. Grapes are my other big producer. I have the Thompson Seedless and my chickens go wild for the fruit and leaves. I also have orange tree, plum tree, lemon, nectarine, Pear and a Asian pear. (cross between an apple and pear) I am looking for a Kiwi next.

What kind of pear tree do you have?

and it stinks really bad... I mean most Asian markets smell like fish, but Lee Lee's smells like something died compared to the other markets.

Durian!  It is an acquired taste.  The smell will gag a maggot, but once you get past that it is pretty tasty.

Lee Lees at 76 Ave and Cactus? That stink? I shop there quite a bit, never noticed bad smells. Over the years I have noticed bad smells is some Ashion stores. If it smells bad I leave.

I am a little behind, just got home last night. I had been out of town helping Flower move.

I don't remember actually. I think it is a Bartlett Pear. It was near death on clearance when I picked it up. The tree is doing well now since it is a few years old but not a lot of fruit yet, just a few pears. I am adding more water to see if that helps. I also added an Asian Pear next to it. It is suppose to be a cross between an apple and an pear. We will see if they fruit this year. We had more chill hours this year. Maybe that will mean more fruit.

Yeah, I'm relatively new, just 15 years in AZ. We moved here in 98. I think the snowy Easter was 99. We were in Phoenix visiting the inlaws and completely missed that storm. We did see it on the news though. I don't remember any accumulation of snow in the past few years. Of course, the weather yesterday would have been considered a mild late spring or late summer day where I grew up in northern MI. I'll take the fleeting cold weather any day. I don't miss the kind that stays for nine months.

Hey, I grew up in Michigan too! Arizona seems to be a popular place to "migrate" to. We came here in I believe 1990, I was still a teen. Don't miss the winters, but summers on Lake Michigan are hard to compare to summers around the pool.

I'm so excited! I'm going to hatch quail! I've had the idea for a while, just not the room... When I hatch my first batch, I might sell a couple dozen of the chicks! If anyone is interested in quail, I should have chicks within a couple of months! Eventually, I will have chicks, adults, and fertile eggs for sale!

The coop is going well! We had a bit of a slow-down after it rained, but we are back to par, working 4 hours a day weekdays, and 10 hours on weekends! Should have it completed soon!

Chicks were three weeks old, yesterday! It's hard to believe I've had them that long... They are a lot bigger than they were. In a while, I will make a thread to help, erm, genderize(?) them?

I am a vegetarian since the 9th, and it hasn't been difficult! I'm surprised my mum hasn't forced me to eat meat! (She's quite worried about my protein intake. Oh, dear.)
