Arizona Chickens

Last night was party night here in my neighborhood. Homeland security released thousands of people who were being detained for illegal immigration. Looks like everybody in the neighborhood had a happy homecoming party. The mariachi music was awesome.

So, the city has officially declared the neighborhood to be "blighted." We now have city inspectors peering over the walls looking for God only knows what. My coop is still empty. My kids did the legal research, and technically the coop is legal. We are not too sure about chickens. I will wait a couple of weeks before I buy chicks again.

I ran my weed eater and got rid of all of the weeds I was saving to feed to the chickens. The city hates weeds. But so far, they haven't done a thing about the empty and burned out houses in the neighborhood. I sure wish they would send the homeless packing. The alley if full of their shopping carts and trash.
 
Sorry to here about your fears come to pass. Homeless is only going to get worse. It used to be the majority homeless want a hand out, drugs and mentally ill. More and more falling victim to economy. I do not know if we still have HoBo s (hoe boys), honest men worked for food and a safe place to sleep. During the depression my dad was one for a summer, hooping fraught trains and all.

I have a difficult time with illegals. One one hand men and woman doing jobs that employers are unwilling or unable to pay legals real wages to legal workers

Then you have the migrant worker. What most people do not realize is Americans refuse to do the back breaking, sun baking, body bending work. On top of that farm workers are skilled labor according to the farmer. I tried to get jobs in the field, I was not skilled or experience in knowing how to cut veggies. You can be trained, but, how many of you can picture your kid baking in the fields being eaten by bugs, cut by vegetation, bent over day after day. It takes time and willingness to deal with pain, long enough to learn how to move around and not get cut up, and a trained eye for bugs that are more painful then others, did I mention snakes?

Ok, so I admit, I was completely clueless.... so I asked my husband to read it and he busted up laughing so hard he was crying and couldn't even tell me what he was laughing about, while I'm sitting there going, "What? What is it?"

they do have groups that will come in and help with neighborhoods.. Also some church organization have youth
that need to do their volunteer. Call your local police precinct & ask for your crime prevention officer..they will give you a
bunch of ideas to help your neighborhood... Now that we all take time to meet & spend time helping
our neighbors, it is better here.. Come and see out G.A.I.N. night out in October. It is a state wide party for neighborhoods.
You get to meet the officers in charge to start a block watch.. It really works.. We are by the light rail & the foot traffic gets
out of control sometimes.. But when you know your neighbors you can call on each other..
 
If anyone is interested in a 5 week old Buff Orpington roo, he's free. Just come get him. Eastside Tucson. I don't want to kill him, but he's too small to eat and if he's still here in a week or so, a neck snap is in order.
 
The garden is coming along well. In fact, we'll have some stuff planted by the time the party comes along next weekend. My wife and I picked up four veggies from Lowe's last night and I have $43 worth of seeds coming in from Native Seeds. Below are photos of the first tier of the raised bed that I built last night. This section will be sunk about 4 inches below ground and two inches above ground. There will be another level of wood above it, but this gets the foundation going. The full footprint is an 8' square, with each section of the bed being about 3 1/2' wide. We're picking up a bunch of compost from Roxanne in Cave Creek tomorrow to fill the bed with. After watering every few days for the last few weeks, the dirt was nowhere near as difficult to dig as I thought, although I do have quite a few rocks larger than my fist. Oh, and the top horizontal section has a matching section on the lower end. I just didn't get the last photo taken. You all get the idea, though. It's all cleaned up a little bit more. Still more work to go, though.

It's official. I have 3 roos that need a good home.
2 Blue Copper Marans (not sure what breeder beehappy4ever got these) and 1 BBS Orpington (from Slackwater)
They will be 12 weeks on Wednesday. Hatched 12/12/12
