Arizona Chickens

I have to agree with this line of thinking. Good grief, cilantro & parsley? that is crazy, great herbs for man and beast! er, fowl ;-) some of these lists make it sound like chickens (and other animals) should be raised in a lab and never allowed out. I throw everything into the chicken pens. Whole tomato and pepper plants, avacado scraps, weeds of all kinds. I grow cilantro and other things to feed to them on purpose. Chickens are maybe not the smartest animal in the world but they are smart enough to be chickens. And that's what I let mine do as much as I can; just be chickens
Wow, that's a really large list. Looking through, I wonder exactly how accurate it is for poultry. It mentions the data comes from Reptile Keeper's Handbook. But it lists a huge amount of plant parts that I know many feed to their girls. Nearly the entire plant for chives, garlic, leeks and onion. Apple and apricot seeds. Milkweed, elderberry, tall fescue if contamined with a fungi, flax, soybean, Sweet potato and tomato plants. Kale leaves, lima bean, pepper and potato (immature) plants. I mean, we're eliminating the entire garden off this list. Practically every week and grass that grows in a regular Arizona backyard is there. Doing a quick search to compare, I found the Comprehensive List of Poisonous Plants and Trees here on this Forum. It looks like it was mostly just a simplified version of the one you referenced, although it includes avocado, cilantro and parsley. Has anyone had a chicken die from any of these things or is this more of the ultra-paranoid list? Based on this, you should keep your girls in an isolated coop and run, fed strictly commercial feed. And that post came out a lot more harsh than I intended... No offense was meant!
That is TOO funny. I almost cooked an egg so I could take a picture similar to this, but now that it's been posted, I'll just show you two of my new birds. These are the one's I brought home yesterday, and they are really into being picked up and held. When I reach into the brooder, all five come running to see if THEY are "the chosen one." What I got are five RIRs, and I am just not into naming my birds. First they will supply me with eggs, then later maybe, food. But that is a L-O-N-G time away. They have to grow up first and then have a great life in my yard. "Hey, I think I saw a camera over this way." "Do you think it would be OK if I took a nap now?" "Hey, we're roomies now, sure you can stay over night." "Where did he ever get such small shoes? I wanted to try this one on, but he's watching." "OK, you try it on, I'll keep a watch for him to come back." I hope someone appreciates my new chick's humor, I am signing off for the night. Skip
Couldn't resist. My wife posted this to my FaceBook wall...
Ok weird... It was a pop up on the bottom of my screen... So let's see what happens..

Tomorrow, after work, my buddy is coming to get his chicks then we'll finally be down to our flock. Yay! it's been fun having them all and watching them grow but it's time to for some of them to move out. I built my coop and run to house 8 (10 absolute max).

Yeah, you have some weird posting problems there. Double posts quite often and then this latest snafu. Usually I can figure out what's what, but that last one with all our quotes posted after our replies pretty much tops your uniqueness!

I just don't have room to grow out so many...These are fantastic chicks from great breeder stock in Nebraska...exhibition lines. already HUGE at 3 weeks. I would love to see them go to homes from BYCers if possible. Just pm me or text 602-510-5916 and I will give you guys half price ($3) and free for cockerels...I have pullets and cockerels fairly identifiable even now at 3 weeks...if anyone has the room, you might want a pair or trio to breed as these should be awesome birds...truly beautiful and dual purpose! I am keeping a few pullets only since I cannot have a roo..

Thanks, Cindy

We have two hens and since I have moved a long distance due to a job, the rest of the family cannot care for them. We are looking to rehome a California Grey and an Ameraucana (Helga and Gladys). They are each just over 1 1/2 year old. We only want to send them to homes where they will be cared for as egg layers and not meat chickens. Since my wife is not really versed in handling them, please arrange for pickup in the evening after they have roosted and are easy to pick up.

We live in the Chandler, Arizona area, near Elliot and the 101. Please send me a PM if you are able to take them.

Does anyone have a problem with their dogs eating the chicken feed? I was buying the dogs gluten free food because one of them has allergys. That doesn't do much good when they are eating chicken feed at every opportunity. I'm open to suggestions!
