Arizona Chickens

Wish I could have kept the blue maran boy to spend time with the blue maran pullet I got from BeHappy.

They are huge and beautiful.

Can't wait to see what she lays come June or July.

I did get a barnyard mix from her that is just so hilariously ugly. He looks like a cross between an EE and a SLW and is just so huge and lanky. I'll end up taking him to Pratt's in a few weeks.

If you knew the amount of people that think I'm crazy for my "natural" health beliefs... Wait, you probably do. It's amazing how people go running and crying to their doctor for every little thing. I think I'm going to have to buy some of this.

That can be a really good price for that, but I can't justify a 50-pound bag! Maybe if five of us went in together. Shipping for that is $35.87, so it would be $63.37 total, or $1.26 per pound. I don't know if there is somewhere better in town to get it. I'll have to look in to it. I am a firm believer in the power of raw honey and raw milk. This would be an excellent addition.

*** EDIT ***
Amazon does have a 10 pound bag for $25.99 with free shipping, too. That is the only one that comes out to be less expensive than Earth Works' products, with the exception of their 50-pound bag. The breakdown is below...

Supplier Quantity Weight Price Quantity Each Shipping Sub-Total Price per Pound
Amazon
1 3 lbs. $18.99 $6.33 $0.00 $18.99 $6.33
Amazon 1 10 lbs. $25.99 $2.60 $0.00 $25.99 $2.60
Earth Works 1 2.5 lbs. $11.50 $4.60 $16.45 $27.95 $11.18
Earth Works 4 2.5 lbs. $23.00 $2.30 $18.43 $41.43 $4.14
Earth Works 1 10 lbs. $14.00 $1.40 $18.22 $32.22 $3.22
Earth Works 1 50 $27.50 $0.55 $35.87 $63.37 $1.27

This is where I get my DE. Similar to the Amazon price? Might even be the same item? It's about $25 w/ shipping for 10lbs. I have used it in my coop, around my house for spiders, etc. and to de-worm my dogs since I stay away from commercial wormers.

And I don't think you're crazy - either that or I'm crazy too.

My kids haven't been to the doctors for anything other than a broken wrist or a required physical for sports. I think we've had antibiotics in the house once and they are all teens and pre-teens now. We even treated my son's Crohn's disease naturally - they wanted to put him on steroids and other meds and perform more invasive testing. I asked them to give me 2 weeks. We treated naturally and all his symptoms disappeared in the two weeks. The specialists didn't know what to say.

I try to treat my animals as naturally as possible as well.

How did you treat Crohn's? I'm not entirely sure what t is, but I've heard of it. I'll look it up in the morning. I always loving hearing about personal experiences like that.

In the meantime, I get to go finish cleaning up my daughter's vomit. She wakes us up saying she's hungry, eats three bites of bread, goes back to bed and promptly projectiles... Thankfully, my parents are three houses down with a carpet shampooer. It's so much better than elbow grease.

I don't post here often, but was too excited not to in this case. My wife bought 2 porcelain D'uccle's (way too pretty to pass up) at the stafford poultry show in january and thier first baby hatched tonite. My 10 year old daughter invited her friend over to spend the nite because we expected them to start hatching, so they stayed up late waiting (somewhat patiently). They were finally rewarded at 2 am. They were kind enough to come wake us up from a sound sleep so that we could see the magic as well.
So can anyone tell if this is a roo or pullet? Just kidding ( a little late night humor).

Have a great night/morning everyone!

Ok... Broody. I was wondering about that. Any suggestions to make her happy? I seem to remember reading that when a hen goes broody, unless they can satisfy the need there is no way to know how long they will stay broody? I do not want to destroy good Fertilized eggs, and I really do not want at this time expand my flock. I need to correct the time, she has not laid sense mid February. ( I am really bad at time.) Do the bellies seem to get hot when broody? I'm not surprised, life is such a wonder. What do they do? Chow off feathers for a pocket for eggs to keep warm?

A broody girl will sit on the nest all day long and not get up. She will stay in the nest at night, too instead of going to roost with the other chickens. The broken feathers could be other birds pecking at them.

An old dog crate, a few pieces of scrap wood, a few bricks and some leftover hardware cloth and my two little girls now have their own coop/run inside the main coop/run. They promptly began chatting with everyone else and dusting themselves in the sand.
These two are supposedly 5-6 weeks now, but are bit smaller than the other girls were at that age. I got them from OK Feed in Tucson. They have a ton of youngsters right now and most seem a little scrawny and wary of people. They are obviously getting bigger in the week we've had them. They aren't as interested in being held as out other chicks were. I think it's because they've been kept separate and they really just want to be with the other girls. I think they'll make a nice addition to the flock.

Speaking of other girls, they are 8 weeks now and one of the Barred Rocks, Pepper, has her waddles and comb turning red. I suspect she is a he. Bummer.

On a YouTub video you can sex new hatchlings by looking at the wing feathers. Even I believe is a roo, short - long - short - long ... A pullet. Or the other way around. Check out YouTub to verify

She is no one to mess with, all the girls know better then to go into her space. The broken feathers are on the sides of her belly, hard to get to by other girls. She only spends about 4 to 6 hrs now in the box, she has been and is uneven in the time nesting. When I put my hand in she doesn't move. As I said, if finds something good or I give a treat, she eats all she wants, if she thinks anyone is going o move in on her treat she nails them fast. Do Alfa chickens get picked?
