Arizona Chickens

Has anyone ever used terracotta bricks in a pan filled with water? The bricks soak up the water in the pan, cooling as the water evaporates. I saw it in a video on youtube, the guys chickens seemed to love standing on the bricks. I have a box fan and a cobra mister, but I am always looking for new and cheap ways to keep my chickens cool.

Is this the one that had the extra thing on their bottom?? One of our chicks had one of those " whatchamacallit " as well..
This was the egg that took almost 24 hours to hatch..
5 un hatched eggs so far. I am going to wait till tomorrow before throughing them out.. Friday is day 25.. Is that the amount of time
I should wait before tossing??
That was her. It was an unabsorbed yolk sac. She kept falling onto her back and couldn't flip over easily so she came to work with me. She slept just about all day. One of the guys I work with looked her over and said that I could cut "the cord" when I get home. He used to have an Emu farm so he knew what was going on.

Have you candled the eggs to look for movement? My mama's left two eggs behind today so I candled them. One I noticed stopped moving days ago and I opened it up this afternoon and the little thing was ice cold (passed away). It was a silkie. The other egg still looks like there is movement so since the mama's won't sit on it, I have it under my Ecoglow heating unit. Will candle again and probably open it up tomorrow.

:gig my first picking today. In fact a group picking. Vony was taking a dust bath in the girls favorite dust bath spot, only she wasn't going to share. Clare, gentil Blondie, passive loner Wheny, even Bon and Power were trying to get her to move. A pick here and there, a sketching at first a little, then it started to get serious. Clare went ballistic with Blondie and powder getting in a pick or two. I just couldn't believe it. At that point I stepped in, I moved Vony over. No sooner she was moved a group dust bath was in full progress. The spot had been big enough for 2 or 3, it is now twice as big, to big for one girl to take the hole spot. :idunno what can I say. Now they are all buds again. They have never gotten into it ware feathers are broken. Not even when Blondie and Lucy were picking it out to who belonged were in the order of the flock. I'm so glad they can not talk, I am sure that some unladylike language would have been heard.

Shade, plenty of water, shade, misting system, shade, pan of water for them to stand in, shade.  And its a good idea to make sure they have plenty of shade. :D

That's about it :thumbsup Ice bottles in their water, cold melons, but they love cold or at temp. I have a basement to my coop, they like it down there when I have a fan on to move the aur.

I was going to candle tomorrow.. But since you mentioned it I will do it now.. They did seem cold earlier.. 1 or 2 seemed light in weight..

3 only had partial development.. 1 a bit more.. However either Loraine ate the outer shell or it just tarted to disintegrate as she
was moving around?? Don't know.. I left 2 under he.. They looked full just not moving? I will check again tomorrow..

I just checked out the last one and it was in the air sac but didn't pip. There was not an egg tooth on it?? Poor baby. I feel bad that maybe I could have helped it the other day

The girls had a great time running the yard with the dog while I grilled {chicken boobs} and mushrooms on cherry wood.

We had dinner on the patio, awesome evening.

Man, we wish you were our neighbor!!!

2X only I have nothing to offer in return. I'm struggling with this coop. I may have to do it in phases. Run, Basement and first floor, penthouse and porch latter. Nothing is as I want it. I have drawn up plans, seen my stuff built. All looked great. :he when I do it not so much.
