Arizona Chickens

So after a long day at work, I came home and raked out the coop and run and installed the mister system. I put a Y on my hose bib, ran about 75' of irrigation hose to the run and up the corner then into the run and attached it to this bendable blue 2 mister head thing I found at Lowes. I let the girls free range while I did that but they eventually went back in for water. I shut them back in for a bit to see if they take to the mister.

Thanks for this idea Madd - I will be using it when the time comes. I am watching the girls daily for heat stress. So far our EE is the only one obviously panting. She hangs out in the shade more than the other two. The frozen watermelon I learned about on here so far makes the difference for her. I have two of those bendy things in my shed and now I know where I will use them.

My dog eats chicken poo like I eat chocolate.

Mmmmm tasty!

This is why I think I need a dog. To clean the yard of chicken poo.

Oh, wait... it goes in small and comes out BIGGER and no one will eat the big stuff so I will have to clean that up... and I can't put the dog poo in the garden... and my feed bill is already pretty hefty. Maybe I won't get a dog. But I can dream of a chicken-poo eating assistant of some sort, can't I?

I got some fertile eggs to put under my broody hen from Mary Hysong, and she was generous enough to let me have 17. I only gave my broody 8, since she's pretty little, so I've got 9 fertile eggs that can go in a incubator or under a broody. If you are interested, PM me and I can let someone have them for free, if you can get them in the next day or two. They are all green or blue-green , laid by EEs who are covered by a EE roo and a Welsummer roo, so you could get a mix of olive, green and maybe even a true blue.

I just want to add that those eggs were collected on thur & fri so they could be kept in the carton at room temp and set next week if need be. I have had a lot of eggs that hatched just fine after sitting on the counter for 7-10 days.

Wish my incubator were not full already.

I did put some golf balls back in the nest boxes...hoping that my other Olive egger will go broody so that I can put the chicks that hatch on the 18th underneath her!

Turning out wonderfully. Love the paint job. My fav color..orange!!

Chicks of Hazzard, so cool!! I hope you have a Daisy and uncle Jesse to go along with Boss Hogg and Roscoe.

Wow that is coming along nice.. Thank you for posting your progress

Thanks guys! I just wish we could get it completely done! Hopefully very soon though. I've been rushing to finish with the heat arriving, ours are in a small prefab coop at the moment, they've been ok with the ice blocks, but they go stir crazy in there and are bouncing around as soon as they see me waiting for me to let them out. But that said I guess it looks like there will be a little cool down next week, so I have a bit of time.

I was originally worried the orange might clash with the stain, but I really wanted to do the Dukes of Hazzard theme. I think it turned out nice though (so far). All the painting and staining has taken a ridiculous amount of time. Just the Chicks of Hazzard part took me 14 hours alone (I just finished the final detail in the dark with a flashlight, lol). And there's still much more to do.

Next time I post pics, it'll be done!!! Thanks again guys.

And Madd, yes, any future chicks will be in theme. And probably Daisy and Jesse are indeed next. ;)

Believe it or not, there are 15 chicks under this big broody plus some eggs that she is sitting tight on!!!
Love it!!

X2!

Vivian says "what are you lookin at?"

I love this picture - with the angle you got and the depth of field, it looks like she's standing on a sidewalk down a busy city street at first glance - like in a chicken city. LOL

In other news today... received a frantic phone call from my mother-in-law - they got hit by an 18-wheeler on the I-40 today while just trying to take a day trip to Seligman. Thankfully they survived. Another lady in front of them was air-evacuated and they didn't think she was going to make it. They were rushed to Flagstaff Medical Center and after having their car totaled, spinning around several times after getting hit, she was released tonight and my father-in-law may be released tomorrow. So scary! But so glad they aren't hurt worse. The DPS officer said that if the truck hadn't hit them, thereby stopping the truck, it would have killed them all. The lady who was air-evacuated was from an accident that happened in front of them just minutes before and all the officers were in the street helping that accident before the next one happened. Looong day - I just got home from taking care of all their animals - and putting their chickens to bed. Good-night!
