Anybody check out the forecast for this week?

...UGH!! We've got a brutal heat wave coming in time for first week of July....lows bordering on 88-90 degrees by this Thursday...that's the tough part of our heat waves is that it does not drop sufficiently to cool anything off at night....

gonna be toughest on our birds, no doubt.

Clucky42 - That is awful!! I can't but can believe a landlord would do that. I'm not sure what your rights are but I would definitely read up on it before reacting.

Question for anyone....

I have been noticing quite a few pigeon feathers in our coop the past few days and today when we got home from a long day out there were, more than I'm comfortable with, chicken feathers on the floor of the run. They looked to be small under feathers from one of my two "blondes". I haven't been able to check the chickens out yet as it got late and dark pretty quick. Is this a "molting" season, just to hot outside....... IDK why there were sooo many feathers out there today.

Forgot to share this yesterday!



Pulled both of those from the same nest box, right next to the golf ball decoy!! This morning I pulled another blue egg from the nest box but they pushed the golf ball decoy out of the box. I can't wait till they are more consistent and I get more than 1 egg a day!! Also I have what I think is a red sex link, or cinnamon queen, or whatever else they are called. She's not laying but is loud as all get out, are they normally loud birds? If so anyone wanna trade a 15 week old for a quieter bird?

This is so interesting and iformitive. I was unaware of the fpdiffinition of livestock, not surprisingly because I have not researched it. I will never know when I will need to call on this information. There is whole sell and retail, the $20.00 is retail. I did not have the wholesale value Tudor a hen. Assumption is productive years of age. Fancy beards and bantams I have no idea and would like to know about wholesale and retail value for average. Ofcourse, what some one will pay for a pullet/hen & cockerel/rooster is not the same as set by market and courts.

A hen at $12.00 is still over $100.00 in property. The $12.00 is selling to feed store, but wouldn't you use replacement value? That would be $20.00? I'm curiouser, this leads to dozens of other questions.

Pratts purchases for $6, sells for $12. Yes, value can vary dramatically, but unless you can show that your birds are worth more than "your average chicken," having a verifiable data point for replacement price is helpful. Anyone can call Pratts and ask what they sell laying hens for. Most of the other feed stores that sell adult birds can vary widely. So a listing of what they were and the prices they would cost at several of the stores would be helpful in determining their economic value.

Broodiness abounds here, as does molting. Piles of feathers make me worried about a predator, though.

I have a few birds I'd like to sell. I'll try here before Craigslist. These are all 8 week olds, hatched April 25, 2013. My rooster is a Black Orpington/Barnevelder mix. As for hens, I have Wheaten Ameraucanas, Blue Marans, Production Red, Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, Buff Orpington, Silver Laced Wyandotte and an Olive Egger. So these chicks are a mix of my roo and any one of my hens. I'm not totally sure of the mothers of each, but I included my best guesses. Feel free to add your expert input! I am asking $5 for the cockerels, $10 for the pullet. I'll have more later, but am waiting a bit for those. Thanks!

Pullet: Looks like from my Blue Laced Red Wyandotte.



Cockerel: I'm guessing from my Wheaten Ameraucans, as they are the only whiteish hens I have. But with the barring, he could be from my olive egger.

They sell hens/pullets for $20.00, I think Roos are $12.00. That is were I got the retail value.

My girls have rewarded me by liking their new pen. They are starting to lay a consistently, when I leave the chicken door open they spend most of their time in the pen. They are starting to use the new coop. First thing I need to do is put in one more roost. After I get the yard cleaned up I am looking forward to putting on the penthouse (will have 3 - 43" roosts) , making the front porch/balcony (railing will be roosts). When I'm done I will remove their old coop. Make repairs to it. I may give it back or keep it for Possable future.

My new pullets are now part of my flock. Their is plenty of room to get away. Most of all they seem happy as a hen can be.

Next year, I plan to put in a high pressure mister for me, extend it to the girls, mount outdoor fans for guarantee air circulation, and an auto water & feeding system for when I'm gone for 48 hours. Longer then that I will have to hire someone. I will take my own advice and be sure a neighbors has my no, and inlets my daughter to check on them. Only problem in 28 years with the same neighbors I do not know them. I tried, but its thanks but no thanks, we have our friends and you are not one of them. .

I'm so excited! I found chicks for my broody! Someone in my area had eggs in the incubator that just hatched. I got 2 white EEs, a white EE bantam, a white bantam of some sort and a bantam with wild-type markings. The daughter wasn't sure what the last 2 are for sure but they were too irresistible to not bring home Now we wait until dark...
