Arizona Chickens

Well, this was a surprise, and thank you for the interest, I really didn't mean to start anything with the statement that I carved signs.

I live in Golden Valley and have worked in Oatman for several years, and actually started making signs because of the guy that was making them in Oatman, Eric had a four disc set of instruction videos that I bought the very first day I was there, met him and his dad that night, they also live in Golden Valley, and even Jamie got excited about them, so I took a week off and watched the videos until I almost wore them out, and started making signs five years ago, but nothing serious.

About a month or so ago when the weather turned so hot, I knew I wouldn't make it too long on the sidewalk selling what I sell in Oatman, so I made a sign to show in the store where I work, it lasted about half an hour and a customer bought it, so I made a few more, and they sold quickly too.

Then I made a few for grins and giggles and THOSE SOLD, so I took a few days off, made one sign about Kingman (the potty stop between Phoenix and Las Vegas), and took it to a few places and the response was amazing, I sold more signs in one day than I could sell in a month in Oatman.

SO ... for the past week and a half I haven't even BEEN to Oatman, just staying home, filling orders, and delivering signs. And almost every time I make a delivery, someone wants another sign.

I know this has nothing to do with chickens, but at least now I get to spend more time at home with my girls, and they seem to enjoy me being there too.

These are all cut on California Cedar, 24 inches long and 5 1/2 to 6 inches tall. It takes a couple of hours to carve each sign, they are all drawn on the wood in pencil, then cut with three different router bits, free hand, and I can carve anything you can misspell (snicker).

There are more, but the most popular single style sign I carve is the Family Name and/or house number that hangs from a front porch advertising where you live.

OK, enough, and thanks for watching, now back to your regular scheduled programing.

PS: edited to add, any questions can be PMed to me and I will gladly answer.

Does anybody know what kind of bird this is? It was on the power line going to the next door neighbors house, and the chickens were all freaked out, and one of my dogs would not stop barking at it.

That is a Cooper's hawk, the most common hawk in Tucson. It's not much of a danger to full-grown large fowl, but are trouble for anything the size of a pigeon or smaller.

Nice signs Skip! That's some talent there.

Figs...I have never eaten a fresh fig. I wouldn't even know how, do you peel them, eat 'em like an apple, cook them, raw.....? My FIL has figs trees from Spain. I don't know what kind they are, but they're really old and he propagates them. He wanted to give me one last year, but I was afraid I'd kill it so i didn't take him up on it. Maybe this year i will. When can i transplant safely?

hello everyone I haven't been on here for a while but I'm wondering if anyone has a chicken coop in Flagstaff area if you happen to have one please pm me :)

Hmmm...that sounds like plenty of water. Did the leaves turn yellow before falling off? Do you know what type of fig it is?

Yes they curled up or looked burnt around the edges before falling off. We haven't used any chemicals on them. The ones that didn't look burnt around the edges simply looked like brown fall leaves. I don't know what type of fig it is. I got it at Whitfills per the recommendation of the lady helping us pick out trees. She said they were great fruit producers and beautiful shade trees. I liked the shape of the leaves so decided to go with it instead of the lime. My lemon looks like it's trying to win the most leaves contest, and the Tangelo is in that game as well. it's a funny looking tree since it's branches are soo droopy. The Trovita tree has a nice amount of leaves and looks completely healthy even though it's actually growing fruit at the moment (although the growing season is supposed to be Dec - Feb.. I think my tree may be a bit confused). I just find it odd that ALL the other trees (about the same size when I got them) look so much more like happy trees , but the one is just being so darn difficult. You have no idea how glad I am that it's FINALLY showing improvement. I can't wait until we actually get fruit off them!
