Arizona Chickens

Thanks for the incubator advice. I had only $75.00 in my budget.... Going to have to rework it.

I'm addicted. . . Now I find Icbar, good layer, looks great, and friendly....... IS THERE NO END?. I feel so defeated. . . . So many wonderful chicks, so little space and money. . . . I just can not go on eBay and look at chickens. I wonder if there is a support group "Chickens Buying Anonymous".

(Mantra) I am getting Maran no more repeat 1000 time . . . Quietly when in public
Did you get a bater yet? PM me I have one and a turner.

UPDATE. I got the. LEOMAN COCKROO MARAN eggs. Now tomorrow I pick up an incubator. I didn't even put in a bid on the other one. Just do not have the money right now. If I didn't have to buy an incabator, I may have,

maybe. . . . Not.

I'm not as bad as I thought. I can resist. 10+ eggs, at 6 or 7 each, if only 50% hatch, will you know the math and the odds. Buying eggs is Russian Roulette with 3 of the 6 chambers loaded.

We'll see. I do not know if it is even Possable to candle Maran eggs. I will not know until 20 days after I get them,

If any one can lend me an incubator, that would be great, I will give you a chick, 50/50 a pullet. I also have 10 Mixed Blue, Black , and Splash Maran s. 20-24 eggs in all. I will have some up for sale after they hatch........

I hope.

Please PM me, I will be leaving to pick up my feed tomorrow about noon or a little later, if anyone has an incubator I can barrow for a month.
That should be lemon cuckoo marans (the "s" is always there, whether you are referring to one bird or fifty). Just so you don't make their mistake in spelling ;)

Quote: One has to go with what one can afford, and not everyone has the $$$ for a genesis or for the cabinet models (which ARE top of their line). A fan is more important than an automatic turner if it comes to a choice between where to spend $$. GQF incubators have a better reputation than Little Giant. Some folks like Lyon; I do not.

Im trying to avoid buying from a hatchery. I'm looking for black australorps. Does anyone sell this breed or know of a breeder here in AZ. I searched the forum found one breeder near Tucson, clicked their facebook and they haven't been on in almost two years... I messaged them any way but I'm not expecting a reply. They also had a link to BYC with their member name... I searched and they no longer exist on BYC. Can anyone help or give me a page number in this thread to start from? 1290 pages is a lot of reading.
James Smith in Central (near Safford) has the best in the state, and some of the best in the country. I doubt he is on BYC, and I don;t know if he does facebook or not.

You might try the chicken swap of arizona page on FB https://www.facebook.com/groups/162698773828108/

In my experience, with roos you can pretty much tell by the size of the testicles how tough the meat is going to be. Anything bigger than pea-sized is going to need slow, moist cooking of some kind. Smaller than a pea, you've got excellent fried chicken.
awesome, i did not know that. THANKS!!
Thanks everyone! I'm excited! One more question. It is skinless at this point, does that make a difference?
i always skin mine, just makes for less fat in the crock pot.
Quote: oh my that would be great. i've been wanting my husband to try rabbit but dont want to buy the frozen ones. i would also be interested in learning how to process rabbit.
I am currently growing out 6+ cockerels for processing. they are about 12 weeks now and a bit on the small side, but 2 are starting to crow. i figure i have about 3 more weeks before no one in my neighborhood will be able to sleep past 4am. i dont have the space to host a processing party, but would still consider it. i'm in mesa.

Flower - there was talk of you possibly being able to come down to the valley near the end of August? that might work out well with my time line, and i would like to learn some other methods as i am a self-taught butcher.
Quote: those egg turners are super convenient if you make sure they are hooked up! i went a whole 2 weeks thinking my eggs were turning when in fact it was off its rocker. so sad :( only 2 hatched
Quote: i am intrigued by your shirt. either its tie-dye, or that was a slippery chicken...

(sorry, twisted sense of humor here) anyways, it looks like my bubble run shirt (awesome 5K btw)

Hey everyone! If any of you know of any farms or agriculture related places that would give me an internship in the east valley could you pm me!! Im trying to get some knowledge!

anyone have any day old chicks? I may have a lone newly hatched silkie that will need a buddy. no feed store chicks.
Hi pastrymama,

I'm brand new to this site and to having chickens. I just introduced myself in the new member forum... I have a group of 8 one week old chicks, mixed flock including 2 silkies, 2 easter egger bantams, 1 marans, 2 polish, and 1 barred rock.

Do you incubate chicks, or how did you come across just one lone fella? What color is the baby silkie? I would seriously consider taking your silkie off your hands if you think it would be safe to introduce her to an already established (albeit still very young) brood? Can you be sure of the sex yet? Unfortunately I can't have any roos (I live in central Phx), would hate to get attached if he turned out to be a he indeed...
