Arizona Chickens

Hey all! I haven't been on BYC in a while... It's been a stressful summer. First, 3 of my chickens died from the heat. (Rosie, Ming Ming, and Jim) Then, my grandmother passed away while we were visiting her. Lastly, my dad was in the hospital for a stroke, and we missed my cousin's wedding. Whew.

Quick question. I need to make my laying flock larger. Does anyone have laying hens for sale? Or free?

I've got a lot of pullets for sale and a few hens if you don't mind a drive to Tucson. I've got 4 black sexlinked hens left, will sell all 4 for $50. They will be 2 yrs old in Nov.
No free birds here with organic feed at $30/bag

If I don't sell 'em live, they get processed and sold for $5/pound.

What do you all do for worms? Chicken poo is gross enough without the little white, moving, worms with the flat heads. I'm at my wits end. I let my chickens out during the day to free range. What can I do as a preventative to these disgusting parasites? I want to know what the more experienced people here do. And what is the life cycle of these, I assume, tapeworms? Any info would be great. Thanks!

I use to use the valbazen for worming esp. for the tape worms. (from your description sounds like what I had) Since that bottle was mostly used up and per the recommendation of Dawg I switched to a little tube of I forgot the name..... I'm thinking it was Zimectrin gold???? I know the gold in the name was important. It is for horses and came in a little tube like a super sized crazy glue container. I asked Dawg about worming problems because it seemed with the valbazen you had to retreat in 10 days and then again if you still saw the tape segments. Then of course there was the egg withdrawal period. With this other stuff you only treat them once and it has the same withdrawal period. It's kinda a fight to get them to take it but I would rather be one and done. I'm sure it's not something you would want to use on a regular basis though. One of these days I wanna try out the pumpkin seed thing to see it's effectiveness.

My medical cabnet is very bare, yesterday I added Duramycin-10 to my 7 Dust and vitamins. I will diffenity fill it out better. I would like to have the stuff here when I need it. As for worming, I am taking it to heart, and add again more to my on hand supply's. I use the 7-dust with a little DE. I dusted again tonight and didn't see any, so they probably only have them in the 100'ds. I just assume mites are part of keeping birds, the same thing with worms. I will have to be more aggressive in my chicken husbandry.

Thanks again for all those posts from everyone.

Zimectrin gold- I used it. The girls would not take it on a piece of bread so I dabbed a pea size on my finger and pulled their wattles and in went my finger. I got good at that!!! Only problem was my EE's with no wattles.

My little silkie mix looks quite like yours Mama Hen Chris
They sure do look alike. How old is your gal?

Anyone have an experience with speckeled sussex or light brahmas? They just became options from the breeder I'm buying from next weekend. They both sound fun but I was only planning on 8 chickens and now its getting out of hand.
my SS were crosses, no experience here with true breed. I have raised 2 light brahmas who were both great hens until i lost one to heat this summer. I have a silver laced brahma rooster which i absolutely love, he's the best rooster! i am currently raising 2 of his young and they are the sweetest babies i've ever raised. of all my chickens i like brahma the best for looks and personality, not so much for egg laying...
My problem is mites! It is a Struggle to keep them under control. I have a served what others have said they suspect, when a chicken is sick mites move in. A healthy girl may have them in the hundreds, a sick one in the thousands. Here is a link to info on mites https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/mites-chicken-pests-how-to-protect-your-chickens-from-mites. I use again Diatomaceous earth. However, I mix it with 7 dust, use a one of those ketchup long noise squart bottles. I can put the tip between the feathers easier to get at the skin. Then I spread it around the pen, and where they take dust bathes or hange up. It has been pointed out several times wood ash works better. Demosthine sugested I check out restaurants that use wood to smoke or BBQ with, give them a galvanized bucket, do to hot ash, to put it in when they clean their ovens/grill.
thanks for that great tip about putting the powder in a ketchup bottle! thats great. i usually put on gloves and grab a handful and spread it all over. i will try this next time.

***re: processing party - i initially committed when i thought it was Aug 25. I might not be able to attend Sept 1 but will try my very best and will attempt to give enough notice since i did plan to bring a few things.
