Arizona Chickens

LKD, i too am sad to hear able miracles loss. i was hoping she'd pull through. good learning experience tho and thank you for the details of how you helped assisted the hatches in different ways.

gallo, we are considering stained concrete, it depends on how good our floors look when we tear the carpet out. judging from under the bathroom tile i'm not sure its going to work. azkat did hers fairly recently so we put it on our list and have asked her lots of questions. honestly, 2 years ago a friend of mine told me i should never do it because i have small kids and they could break their head... not sure why i listened, my kids are tough as rocks, they would probably break the floor. after azkat did hers and she has little ones i kept thinking - is it really that much different than tile?? i am pretty dumb sometimes, lol.

MandyFitch: If you want to find a no-kill home for your rooster, the good news is that its easier to find homes for desirable breeds, and Marans and Lavender anythings are popular right now.  On the other hand, 50% of all chicks are male, and the ideal ratio of males to females in a flock is somewhere between 1:6 and 1:10, depending on who you ask, which means that the vast majority of roosters are out of a job.  Personally, I have trouble processing roosters that I've raised from a chick, so I generally pass my roos on to someone who is going to eat them, and I have other people who send their extraneous roos to me for the same reason.  The way that I look at it is that a back yard raised rooster has a good life with plenty of fresh air, sunshine and treats, and will have a quick, humane death.  That is better than what 99% of the chickens eaten in this country get, so by increasing the supply of humanely reared chicken meat, you're helping to decrease the total amount of suffering experienced by chickens.

City Farm: Bleach makes me sick as well, but I'm paranoid enough about mold that I make an exception.  Last time I needed bleach, I got the 'linen scent' kind at my sister's suggestion, and it didn't make me as sick as regular bleach.

Ok great idea on the bleach..

Now about roosters.. One of my detest friends that has another Kent Jr. Has decided to re-home.. I guess he is to agressive

towards the girls.. He is a silkie.. Kent senior is a partarridge. His mom is a buff.. I can tell you from the reaction of a few while

we wer processing our Kent Jr.. His testicles were 3x larger than the biger birds we processed.. So who knows if that has any

thing to do with behavior?? Our Kent Jr was more agressive to our girls as well.

Here's a question for you.  How large was his comb?  Comb size is supposed to relate to the amount of testosterone in the bird....

Sometimes a change in flock dynamics changes the attitude.  And sometimes it is who they interact with.  A friend was deathly afraid of one of her roosters...he bit her EVERY time she went into his pen, and she became very afraid.  I could see it in her when she opened the door to show me.  I wasn't afraid (he'd never bitten me), and he acted just fine to me when I went into his pen and picked him up.  Animals are often very good at reading emotional signs and reacting to them.  It's part of how they stay alive in the wild...  FWIW, this lady is the same one who was afraid for her great pyr and chased it out of a pen with a bobcat---and took on the bobcat herself.

Just saw this, his comb was medium. His dad Kent has a huge one.. He does not go after me or the girls.. He is sweet..
Chicken dynamics are funny..
Little stinkers..

:frow Hi everybody. Sorry to hear about your uncle Beckysinglsc. notinoz, our house is completely torn up. We're getting ready to stain our concrete floors. (wait, was that you that talked about staining concrete?)

LKD, it looks like you've been bitten by the incubation bug.
Hi Gallo, Miss your post.. And most of all your wonderful photos.. How is your tilapia? We were talking about that at the processing get- 2-gether. Well, & your hanging lettuce.. I could keep on going.. But you already know you rock..

STAINING concrete? That is interesting. A few years ago, alright, a lot of years ago, before I got my daughter back home (and my grand sons). I pulled up my carpeting. I had several funky idea's. they didn't come out of Better Homes And Garden or a home Fastion, you know the magazines. Redecorating your home on a shoe string, The bottom basement store, Drexel Heritage, Williams and Senoma, and other discount stores....... Ya, if you have an unlimited budget.
I had at the time serval directions.
1 paint a meaningful mural on the floor, challenge was bridging thems from room to room. Sealing in a layer of transpartent polymer. Can't remember what it was, I needed about 4 coats of the stuff, there was another medium that I thought would be better, but I couldn't put it down myself.
2. cover the floor with painted canvas rugs. Over a painted sealed floor.
3. Seal the gray concret and leave it as is.

I never Hearn of staining, tell me about it. What do you need to do to stain. Do you need to acid wash to floor?

I just love how fearless everyone is on this BYC. Doing interesting things, fearlessly lessoning to your own music. There had been a time when a friend told me that I would not only talk about doing something, but I would do it. (Of course, talking is a good thing, lessoning to yourself is even better..... Figuring out what needs to only talk about and what is a good idea to do..... Is not always easy.)

They sell all of the stuff to do it at Home Depot, and probably at most hardware stores. There is a special cleaner/etcher that you use (after a regular mopping), then the stain, then the sealer. All of the products go down fairly quickly, but need to sit for several hours, and once the sealer goes down, it needs to sit for 2 or 3 days before you can put furniture on it. The whole thing took us a full week to do, from the time that we moved the furniture out to the time we moved it back in. I'm kind of sensitive to chemicals, so we'd do one part of it in the morning, then I'd clear out for several hours, which added a couple of days to the project. Everything went down with paint rollers, and it was by far the easiest thing that I've ever done to a floor.
The floor got stained almost exactly a year ago, and so far it seems to be holding up really well, even though its in a high traffic area.

Anyone heard of or know of one of those websites where you can post pictures of leaves of various trees/plants and others can comment on what might be going wrong? Run on sentences are so very cool right? Just trying to figure out nutrient def. on my various fruit trees and the internet so far contradicts itself. The easy garden isn't much help either.

Pure Little Miracle passed on about 13:20 today. A good fight, that is still a Miracle. I hope she didn't suffer.

Last hatched Rocket, on the go and inquisitive

These two look like they are going to be Blue Marans

And these must be Black Copper Marans

I would like to hold on to them until Sun to be sure they are thriving...... PM me if interested. I have 2 not seen here Blythe, a blue and Basil, a black copper. The others I'm keeping for sure. I will let Angle go, Lemon Cuckoo Marans, if you understand she started with the abdominal problem. I will be keeping 3, open to trade of 1 week old or so.

Im sorry you lost Miracle. :C The rest look very nice tho! I think the two top are blue and the bottom is black.
