Arizona Chickens

SO chicken noob question. The temps have changed pretty drastically here the last few days. All (but I think one or two) of my chickens is laying eggs, and the others should be here shortly. I don't have a heat lamp, but I'm cold, so I'm thinking they may be. Is it necessary to get a heat lamp for them, or should they be fine? I didn't know anyone who ran one in Iowa... but all the chickens I knew in Iowa were yard chickens, and really only like 2 ppl had farm chickens.

In AZ they should be absolutely fine with no extra heat. I have read cold hardy chickens are fine all the way to 0 deg.F. You can put a heat lamp in your coop but as long as they're fully feathered I don't think you need to worry at all in our region.
 
So not sure how many of you have read my posts about my problem child RIR Phillie. She has had issues from like day 1. She's a total loner, I was very concerned she wasn't a girl for the first 4 months because her feathers grew in funny, she's always been very runty and slow to develop. This past week she had a hurt leg where she had to be locked in a cage for a few days. Her limp is finally going away. I really thought she would be the very last of my birds to lay because of her "specialness". A couple of days ago she started doing the squatting thing. When my BSL Onyxia started squatting it was almost 3 weeks before I found her in the nest box ready to lay. So today Phil started doing all the signs like the little kid pee pee dance, pacing, and then I found her in the nest box. I'm totally shocked. In 1 week she turned into a totally different chicken. I'm really proud of her. Now I'm just waiting for the egg which I think may be today.




and as you can see I never did the coop wash down the other day like I promised.

I have a little RIR - we call Little Red - who is tiny comparatively - and she only lays once in a great while but often passes membrane without egg yolk, shell, etc Because she has such a personality I've just let it be. I've watched over her and notice she is getting bigger and happier - who knows what will happen.

We call ours that too, or Lil' Phil. Here's a few pics to show how she turned out.

She's still small but she looks like an honest to goodness hen now.

Thanks, I tend to save old clothes for my craft projects so I made them up from an old pair of jeans and a tank top that had gotten stained.

Phil's in the nest box again right now, she's been in there for a while. *crosses fingers*
