Arizona Chickens

I am not sure I am posting in the right place... I need some advice on BYCs in Mesa, AZ in an HOA... HOA says no, city says yes... Anyone have any experience with Sierra Ranch ll ?

It depends on a lot of factors. I remember one discussion where a member said she was able to get a prescription for her chickens because the eggs are healthier than commercially available ones. It was also pointed out that the highly valued "organic" eggs are from vegetarian chickens, which caused deficiencies in those brands. She ultimately won her case on the grounds of medical necessity. Similar to service dogs. An HOA can not violate that.

Others have also won because they did not sign the CC&Rs, while others just fought it until the HOA gave in. You can try the "pet" routine, using Chi Ken diapers and saddle covers. Just a few thoughts.

If the HOA says no chickens the answer is NO CHICKENS.  HOAs can have stricter rules than the city.

It seems that HOA's have so many problems.. We are so thankful this IS NOT a HOA !! :ya

Does anyone have an extra bag of the organic co-op 20% chick grower feed they could spare? I would gladly pay for it plus an extra 10$, or buy you a replacement bag at the next order. Or does anyone know a local source for organic feed?

Thanks,
Tim

Hey kev, do you know much about solar water heaters? Anyone?

I know quite a bit, not everything but pretty close. I've installed hundreds, my brother over a thousand. If you can get it for the right price then its worth it but with how energy eff. the real ones have become it would take quite a while to gain back any savings. Stay away from Fafco!!!!!!!

I was going to make a plucker attachment to the drill this weekend, but totally forgot. I was even at a Lowe's! All I need is a pvc end cap. This weekend I'll be processing 4, maybe 6, of my meaties as Cornish game hens. They are doing great. I picked up 6 more from the feed store, and they said they were from the same batch as my originals--they've only had the one order of broilers. Mine are huge compared to the new ones. It has to be the fermented feed--unfortunately I don't even feed these things on a 12 on/12 off schedule...meaning, I should probably be feeding them much more. So far I've had a really good experience raising these broilers...this weekend is going to suck processing the 6 but that's what they are for, I just have to keep that in mind.

Tucson peeps, don't forget to vote tomorrow. Voting "yes" on Prop 402, the Tucson General Plan Update, includes expanding urban agriculture. The election in mail-in only, so if you haven't voted yet, you'll have to drop your ballot off...somewhere (not sure where).

We only just started thinking about solar water heaters again this weekend. We started looking into it a few years ago, but now our old heater is looking like it may be on it's way out so we're thinking about replacing it with solar. As I get back into this I'm sure I'll have some questions for you. I love that we have such a diverse skill set out there among our members.

Good luck with the processing! Thanks for the reminder about the vote too. We forgot to send in our mail ballot so we'll have to drop it off in person tomorrow.
