Arizona Chickens

OK, I just went out to check on my one laying hen, and I found one of my reds on top of her, holding her down. I was not sure if we had any roosters because they all seemed to be quiet and fairly calm. No crowing at all from any of them. So is this one a rooster if it was pinning her down like that? Here's some pics: It's the one right in the middle here:

Oh boy looks like a boy.. "Pinning" I call it a tap, it is literally a tap.. Then the hen will shake it off.. Then off she goes to look for more worms, crickets or treats.. You would be blessed to have a rooster that does not crow... Our new roo does not crow as often as his dad crowed.. Sometimes you can get a quieter rooster..

Weather report for 86047 !!! three inches of snow during saturday and sunday. City streets flooded but mostly dry by monday afternoon. SOIL  is wonderfully wet !  Now if I can find the itme to get out there and od some work before it get crazy again.

Well I own ten acres in Apache County if anyone wants to homestead. It is along the AZ/NM border in the north mesa area and there is a good amount of rain there. Cattle country but I do know some folks who live there and grow gardens and raise chickens. I bought it thinking that I would go camping in the summer but my four wheel drive needs a new switch before I can haul my camer out there.       The road is only three miles off the highway but the soil is sandy and the rains causes big problems.  Anyone know where I can get a replacement switch for my 92 Ranger ?

Ahw.. You re so kind.. Do you have a well? Or river running threw your property?

Hello.  I am new to the community. I thought I would chime in on the most recent post and introduce my avatar. I have used this site so many times but never had found the Where am I? Where are you? forum.

Anyhoo, my input.....definitely a cockerel. Not sure how old but you said not crowing. Looking at the hackles and saddle feathers coming in, longer and pointy...plus the larger comb and wattles....plus mounting tells me you have a cockerel. IMO.

Thanks! Hatching was not in my plan just yet, so gotta decide if we want to keep him now or not.

katmotley, he really looks like a Production RIR cockerel to me. He's a handsome boy. I think he resembles our boy, Rhode Island Rhett. Rhett just started to crow a few days ago, at 19 1/2 weeks. (In the photo he turned 20 weeks.)



All of our 16 roos are calm, pretty docile, hang out together, and seem to get along. We have a few hens that have feisty moments though, so you can't go by personality. A good indicator is his "saddle" feathers- short, thin shiny/ pointy feathers flopping to the side in front of his tail.

Mine is a production red as well and right about 21 weeks. Looks just like yours! My leghorn has been at the top of the pecking order, so was weird to see her pinned since she's usually pecking everybody else. lol

Thanks so much. I had a buyer from the South Valley come out here for another of his offspring, a New Hampshire/Faverolle cross. They wanted Marvin too. Said, " Name your price! They ended up buying the NH cross and a young blue Salmon Faverolle cockerel.

Marvin was supposed to be sold to me as a 2 week old pullet. He faked out the breeder due to his coloring. Her breeders were Salmon Faverolles. Not sure how blue got in the mix.

I had a potential buyer for one of his offspring from your area. Sierra Vista area, I think. They wanted me to hold this cockerel for a planned trip up here. He later told me it was fine that I bartered him. His wife probably wouldn't be too happy with him showing up with another bird! Funny!!!!
Not too savvy about selling and holding any of my birds, I ended up bartering for him, goats milk soap and $5. Go figure. This guy lives 3 miles away. He had the typical Salmon Faverolle coloring.

Be careful...a word to the Wise

...You may end up with a chicken keeper illness...."Hatch Fever". Sometimes it manifests from illness to addiction!

Comes at you Fiercely too!
My remedy is..Hatch more!

LOL, I am thinking hard about keeping him, but I'm pretty new to chickens and not sure I'm ready to start hatching yet! I do love those baby chicks! You are close to me, I'm in Waddell also. We're off of Northern and Citrus.
