The crop bra I made for Eleanor seems to be working wonderfully to prevent sour crop from her pendulous crop. I have her on normal dry crumbles and free ranging most of the day and haven't had a single issue all week. I did have to remake it so it was wider because with the original one her crop kept working its way around the side of the fabric so it wasn't helping unless I adjusted it several times a day. Now she eats all day and is empty in the morning. She seems to get around in it fine so I'm super pleased. I don't think her crop will ever be normal so she'll have to wear the bra forever but if it gives her a happier life I'm ok with that. Now I just hope she starts getting more nutrients from her food and maybe even starts laying again.

Flower came in last night, it is so nice having her here. I Flower enjoys a glass of wine ever so often, so I thought it would be nice to pick up a bottle of table wine. I know nothing about wine. I as I searched the shelves at the grocery store I became more confused by my lake of knowledge....... Erika! I found it! How could I go wrong......... They even have Free Range Red. It was actually pretty good. Not very complex but a really nice table wine. We found it at Sprouts on sale, in whites, reds and pink wine................

I am a wine snob, fiend, aficionado, gulper. I have to say I love the Rex Goliath wines and this was long before I was a chicken owner!!

Hi there! 
  I have 2 Welsummers, 2 Iowa Blues, 3 Easter Eggers, 2 Rhode Island Reds, 1 Ancona and 1 Silkie/Cochen mutt hen.  They're all hens.  Also found an injured pheasant 2 days ago.  Trying to find his owner through online classifieds, but no luck.  I'm not really sure what to do with him.  I know he is not very happy in the 8' -4' pen we are keeping him in.   He won't survive on his own.  Maybe adopt him out....

We like Rex Goliath too! It's a pretty good value for the money. We prefer the Cabernet, Malbec and Shiraz; while I love the name "free range red," it's too sweet for my tastes. But what's not to love about the label?

How often does your silkie/Cochen lay? & what color egg? A client of mine was talking about mixing the two just last week..

My silkie really surprised me. From what I researched on Silkies they take up to a year to mature (to crow or lay) and she started laying very young. Probably 5-6 months. Her eggs are very small, she is petite. She can fly, but doesn't. She fluttered about quite a lot as a baby chick. Her eggs are very smooth and very light brown. She lays about every other day right now. She started only a few weeks ago. Sometimes she lays a few days in a row. The weather has been going back and forth. She is a good layer though. She is so so so sweet, soft and cute.

I would not recommend the Iowa Blues for a companion bird. They're a small, hardy bird. They are fairly aggressive with resources, like food and water. It seems that they attack the other birds for sport or fun. They haven't drawn blood, but they are very fast and very determined. When I hand feed the birds, they bully their way to the front, peck the feed the hardest and they peck other birds who are eating what they want. It's my understanding they came from the line of chickens kept in the Appalachians, who weren't fed, but allowed to roam and forage for themselves. It makes sense. The pluses of the Iowa Blue is that they began laying very very young and they lay very frequently. Other than that, I wouldn't get them again. I love my hens and they get on my nerves with all of their dominant behavior.

Looks great. I have sugar snap peas that have been doing great for me. I'm about to harvest my second bushel this week and the broccoli just started getting a head so super excited about that, it's my favorite every year. It got a late start this year for some reason though. There's lots of green tomatoes too so tapping my foot impatiently at them.

That's fantastic! I only have a couple plants this year; I miss picking giant bowls full every few days. We'll have enough to make broccoli snow-pea stir-fry several times before the heat, but not too much to make everyone sick of it like last year. I never get tired of it though. I too got a really late start this year, I always say, "next year I"ll be on time!" Then I'm late. I have tomatoes that are just ripening too, they should be ready tomorrow. I have been getting seeds started for my spring/summer garden though. I sprouted and transplanted tomatoes and bell peppers over the past few days and I'll get a bunch more started over the upcoming days.
