Arizona Chickens

Good dog!  Really, a dog like that is priceless.  Careful though, coyotes are smart and they will lure a dog away from the house and near the other coyotes to kill for a sort of cannibalistic meal.  My nephew lives in NM near Taos and they have this problem.  He almost lost his golden retriever to the coyotes that were waiting.

I depends a lot on the dog. There are breads that even a pack will not take on. The true Husky, Malamute, Ikea, Russian wolf Hound (Borzoi), Ridgeback Hound, and all the breads that are bread to protect sheep, different members of the bully breads, Great Danes, mastiffs (all of them) can not be discounted. The Borzoi and ridgeback are more of a pack hunter. Golden retrievers are not known to be good fighting dog, never discount there heart or love for the family. There are a lot of mutts that are surprisingly good coyote dogs. I believe, that the guard dog breads are more likely to quite the chase early to return to his responsibility of the animals under its care. Others will not stop until the wolf or coyote is dispatched, if not called back.

I have several dogs in mind for myself, will decide at the time, I leave it to my higher power, Pit Bull, American Bull Dog, Australian Healer, Great Dane, mastiff, or American Mutt.

Hello all!

New to chickens, fairly new to AZ. Grew up in SC where land was plenty but decided to start urban farming once I moved to the lovely cramped neighborhood in San Tan Valley in the east Phoenix Valley.

I want to get 4 golden comets, an Araucana, and an Easter Egger. These are pretty specific to what I want and I'm wondering where's the best place to get them. I do t mind an adult hen but would probably prefer pullers about to lay. Really not interested in raising them from chicks. Any advice?

craigslist for non chicks.. there are alot of local breeders in the phoenix area.. i live up further north where there arent alot of breeders.. so i chose to order my chicks from chickensforbackyards.com (they are located in montana)

Okay, I think I'm going to go the cup method for my new waterer. Right now, I have both the regular 1-gallon gavity-feed waterers, and 2-gallon buckets with nipples, in both the meatie and layer coops. Both types prefer the regular waterers. I hate the regular waterers because they get disgusting and I'm lazy and hate cleaning them and filling them up every day. But mostly, they get so filthy, even when elevated. I really have fears of leaving my chickens without enough water, which is why I always have both available though.

In the meatie coop, I'd like to do a 5-gallon bucket system with the cups. In the layer coop, I can hook up the 30-gallon barrel to a pvc line with the cups. It does look relatively easy to set these things up, but man, it would be so much easier just to buy the set up from beakline or Strombergs. Too expensive, but it would be nice. I foresee a billionity trips to Lowes just to get these two things done.

As of this morning 5 new babie chicks... The Millie Fluer is so adorable with all the feathers on HER feet... Even if it is a roo,
he will be beautiful!! Like his dad, Clark Kent... We originally had 8, I will be checking the other 3 this evening.. I candled them at day
14.. There was 3 that did not look like they were progressing.. I will be candling the eggs from McMurry this evening.. Last
I checked about a week ago only 1 out of the 6 that survived the U.P.S. employee's bad behavior of throwing a box that said
FRAGILE, "RUSH" hatching EGGS, might only make it.. 6 were crushed and the yolk was every where... This single egg is a
Araucana. Any way, hoping for all 6 to hatch...

You are welcome. However the recipe credit goes to Pearl Mast. She and her husband David have been running a mesquite milling workshop/local foods potluck every year out at the community center in Cascabel. I will have to try adding vanilla--that sounds awesome! Mesquite flour is best stored in the freezer.

I have a container of just the mesquite flour and one of the pancake mix I keep frozen. My only source, on the other side of the valley, is $16 per pound.

Sounds like my plans. Removed all the gravel, dug out a giant tree, laying in sprinklers, paving a patio, building a short wall and putting in sod. I just bought a bunch of Rumlestone Sierra Blend pavers from Home Depot to make sure it'll look good. I'll go back in a few days for the rest. The three days of rain seriously interfered with this project, but I prefer the rain!!!

Sounds like my plans. Removed all the gravel, dug out a giant tree, laying in sprinklers, paving a patio, building a short wall and putting in sod. lol my husband has to go into phoenix friday into saturday but sunday we will be going to the store... (cant do anything without him lol)
