Arizona Chickens

Totally didn't know that! Sounds great. Living down here, I never assumed that one could grow hops and other "exotic" stuff! Going to be working on the raised beds out back this weekend. My wife wants Salsa type stuff. Its common down here. I could try to get some Hops as well.

i wish i lived up north. whats the job market like up there? any need for animal cops? lol

i really missed my calling! my grandma worked with her local humane society until her health wouldnt allow it. and my dad worked for animal care and control while i was young. i feel strongly about animal living conditions. its in my blood. i still cant stop thinking about this really.
Woke up this morning its super cold outside & windy... and all i can think about are those baby chicks outside :(

Way to meny things going on, not enough time. Trying to catch up. Quit posting of latest pictures of my little peeps, and I need son advice.

The gray Marrans still has yoke sake to obsorb. There appears not to be 100% closed. There is a small about then a millimeter slite. Looks like a very clean cut, bit it is not. It took almost 48 hrs to come out. It had its shell partly zipped, was getting weaker. Every time I came home I checked on its progress. The membrane was drying out so I moistened it. Yesterday I removed enough of the shell to make really easy to uncurl and fall or pop out. To day the peep in able to move but with effort. I strategy is leve him alone to finish closing. Question, should I put blue Kote on it. Blue Kote stings tarrably, but I do not want infection.

I have presented water and dry food.

i thought those were lincoln logs in those pictures. too stinkin cute. i am glad your three are wanted and will be well cared for.

my chicks are 4 weeks old and have been outside since 8 days old, in mesa, with a heat lamp. they are in an open air brooder and can move as close to or as far away from their lamp as they want. sometimes things that we see and would never do, other people have been doing fine for years. but did you say day old chicks in a wire pen? that even for me is too much.
Yeah, but Mesa doesn't get into the teens at night with cold wind from the north and blowing off of snow covered mountains either. Don't think some of you all realize how cold it gets up here and how the wind blows. I live in Chino Valley which is Indian for Big Wind Valley.

I hard boiled our girls eggs for the first time. I now see why people say fresh eggs are impossible to peel. I used our oldest eggs from the fridge which were about 2 weeks old. I've never had an issue hard boiling and peeling store bought eggs so they must be REALLY old at the store. In any case I remember people mentioning egg steamers so I went to Bed Bath and Beyond and found the Cuisinart Egg Central. It only does like 10 eggs at a time but it worked perfectly. Perfectly cooked and super easy to peel. It wasn't like the steamers I had seen people post pics of. It looks like a metal egg. It supposedly also cooks eggs other ways which I have yet to try. I recommend it. http://www.cuisinart.com/products/specialty_appliances/cec-10.html

I found a very easy way to hard boil fresh eggs. Start you water to bring to a boil. While waiting flip your eggs so the large side is up and use a thumb tact to pierce the egg shell. Try not to pierce the membrane but if you do it is ok. Once the water is boiling place the eggs in softly. Boil for 16minutes then place in a nice bath immediately for 15 minutes. They peel easily and most the time comes off in two pieces. And the eggs are so much better than any hardboiled egg I have had. Moist not dry.

The steamer is similar in that it comes with a thing to poke a hole in the eggs before placing them in the steamer. I LOVE the steamer. It was only like $40 and I use it constantly now.

Hi! It has been quite interesting the last 10 hrs or so. I am beyond swamped with need to clean, organize, down size and finish the job I started a little over 18 mo ago. I used to be a borderline hoarder. I need to finish my cleaning out my life. This is what has happened to day. A little of this, then that came up so I had to do whatever, then turn around an quickly go in another direction.

What I have now is a bunch of sweet little fluffy butts, and 6 bantams that need homes. I know I have 1 possibly 2 Roos. I will post pics tomarrow of the bantams, not related to the fuzzy butts. Oh! Not sure but I may have a Silky that will also need a home.

I have 9 pullets laying and one free loader. In about a month as dust clears I hope to rehome 4 or 5 of them reducing about half. Right now I am not prepared to deside who to give up, sence I do not have to right now, I am going to wait. After the foster children have a good home and my bantams are gone, I will take a deep breath and face my little dilemma on down sizing my flock. (not really downsizing) I wish to keep a couple of pullets from Angle and room for at lest 1 NN FROM Sylvia and Angle, and have room for Sylvia if she dose come home. I am aiming for a stable flock of 6 to 9 pullets and hens. I really only need 2 or 3 eggs a day now. I just love all my girls so much. But it is really for the best.

Here is a video of the foaster chicks. PM me. I put togather a fast brooder. [VIDEO]
