Arizona Chickens

Thank you. I have honestly never read the NN thread because mine are a cross with Ameraucana. I know that mine are my favorite birds that I own. They are so friendly and fun. I do not know it that is normal for everyone or just the cross I have.

Mine is also the sweetest bird. I have two NN and they are the kindest, best with my kids, etc of my birds (even better than the BO and barred rock).
If you can get past the lack of feathers they are great birds, friendly, calm and lay a med to large egg every day...except when broody.

You mean it didn't stink when you opened it? The one I have is in a tube and I always seem to get some on me when I open it to squirt into the bottle; The stink gets worse as it fills with flies, they die and rot. You can always drop in a peice of raw meat, that attracts them also

kpgoldstar, your fly bag is probably reeking pretty well now, so this is moot...but I noticed mine emitting stench 1-2 days later. It takes a while to work up the reek.

I spread the Arbico fly eliminator yesterday. In a week or two, I will report back.
Maybe I got a different kind than you all are mentioning. It is this one here.

You can't open it to put meat in. It is all self contained. I put it out around noon. By 7 last night no stench and there were about 15 flies in the bag. This morning still no smell and about 40 flies had been trapped. They were at Lowes for $5 each. I just ordered a 12-pack on Amazon for 46.00. There were still 100 flies around my coop so although it is working, not sure how much of a dent it has made. I'll keep you posted and I'm also interested in how the arbico works for you pipemum.

I buy the Rescue brand disposable fly traps. Flies are a big problem here, it is not just my birds---I have several close by neighbors who have multiple horses. 5 or 6 horses on the one property, and also a cow. I get mine at valleyvet.com, 24 at a time, comes to $3.69 each with free shipping. As soon as one slows down in catching flies, I hang another one nearby but leave the first one up.
When the weather is cool, they catch more if you hang them in the sun, then reverse that when the weather gets hot.

The one big mistake I made was last year, I took all the dried flies and scattered them in the pens for the chickens. I figured good protein, right? Well I have been having tapeworm problems. My birds don't free range, so they are not getting that many bugs, only the few foolish enough to venture into a chicken pen. I read in The Chicken Health Handbook that houseflies are an intermediate host for one species of tapeworm. I suspect the flies I gave them. There was a 5-gal bucket 1/2 filled with dried flies, collected over many months: imagine how many flies that was?? So do yourself and your birds a favor and throw those fly traps away when full.

Wait, so you dont have a rooster, but you are incubating eggs from your hens????? Unless you didnt explain yourself as well as you thought you did, what result are you hoping for?
hahahaha, see? I am glad somebody else caught that as well!

I was hoping I miss read the no rooster part or that they have eggs from a "fertile" source.

I was digging in the yard a couple days ago and I found this creature, buried in the ground. I emailed the pic to desertmarcy (who knows about herps) and she said it's a Western Blind Snake (Leptotyphlops humilis). She said, "they spend most of their time burrowing but can sometimes be found on the surface, especially after rains. They eat small insects like ants, larvae, and termites." ANTS!!! TERMITES!!!

How perfect is that? A snake you never see that eats ants and termites.

wow we just found one 2 nights ago while moving bricks. we thought it was an earth worm until my husband saw it slither. He put it in a jar and came in to research what it was. After finding out it is a blind snake. very cool looking little snake.

I fell in love when I went to get more chicks from my breeder this year. She raises all the types of ameraucana and wheatons and last year I had almost a 50/50 percent of hens to roos so we wanted to add to our flock.....haha I soooo added to my flock because we got 8 NN/Ameraucana crosses, 12 ameraucanas , 4 crested, 4 silkies and 3 i have no idea because I adopted them , and 9 ducklings and 2 goslings.....rofl. My husband wanted to add on, he just never said how many. They all range from a few days (ducks and goslings) to 5 months (2 of my NN) and the 4 silkies are a year old. I know what a selection huh. But I just love my NN and so do my boys. so friendly and fun. :)

I AM IN PRESCOTT VALLEY AZ AND I WAS TOLD AND RESEARCHED THAT IN THIS TOWN THERE IS NO CHICKEN ALLOWED IN OUR BACKYARDS,
IS THERE ANY PRESCOTT VALLEY RESIDENTS THAT WANT TO HELP ME HAVE  USA CONSTITUTION RIGHT NOT TAKEN AWAY FROM US?
SOME CITY OFFICIALS  ARE INTIMIDATED BY  WHOM CAN CONTROL THE COOP....AND WE DID FIND OUT THAT THEY HAVE ABBUNDANCE RESOURCE TO WASTE IN ORDER TO REINFORCE THAT ROOLING
I READ IN THE USA CONSTITUTION  THAT EVERY AMERICAN CITIZEN IS ALLOWED TO RAISE 2 CHICKENS PER HOME'S RESIDENT,
NO ROOSTERS ARE ALLOWED WITHIN CITY LIMITS AND YET PRESCOTT VALLEY RESIDENT ARE GIVEN OUT CITATIONS IF THEY CATCH ANYONE HAVING CHICKEN

IS THERE ANYONE ELSE THAT CAME ACROSS THIS PROBLEM.......

I have that kind. If it's not stinking now, it will be! At least it's working, stink or no stink.

desertmarcy--good to know. I read the ingredients on the fly bag, and there's nothing toxic in them...so I was considering dumping the flies for the chickens. Not now! Thanks for mentioning the tapeworm possibility.

Hey guys, how long does a hen have to be broody before I could put a couple of chicks under her? I don't have time for her to hatch eggs but I could give her a couple of babies to raise. She's awfully committed the wooden eggs she's sitting on. Been five days now.

I was "attacked" by one of those blind snakes years ago. Alright, maybe attacked is a bit strong of a word related to a tiny 4" snake, but we startled each other and the snake came out the winner than night.
