Arizona Chickens

I think Marans are like any other breed in that each bird has its own personality and some can be more ornery than others.(And some lines might be less friendly) I ordered eggs from two different people here on BYC and all of them have been super sweet. My Blue Copper Marans is now with my mother in law and he lets my 2 1/2 year old nephew pick him up and carry him around and is nice to all his hens. Even when first meeting other chickens he was nice, but I am sure some can be mean. Check out the olive egger thread! There are some really really pretty eggs that come from breeding Marans with Ameracaunas!
Ok I will check it out. Man I am so addicted to BYC and am on 3 or 4 threads already. I do not have an incubator so I have not ordered eggs (probably a good thing) but I really love having color variety in my eggs. it is my own personal mission to have as many different colors as possible. silly I know. now that I have my husband as in to this as I am we are in BIG trouble. only God knows how many chickens and breeds I will end up with!!!! yeah too bad that 12 step program does not work.

Post your beautiful silkie boys over on FB on AZ Backyard Farmers. No one on this thread breeds anything except Suze and she has more boys than she knows what to do with. Lol! Also, try the VPA. There is someone on there "Allison McKee" who lives up north of me a little who breeds blues. Try finding her. Also my friend Robin has a sister in Cali, she may want your boys and I may be able to fandangle an exchange of some sort. They both have whites, blues, splashes and blacks. See if you get any where. Lemme know.

And $20 for a silkie roo is nothing for all you naysayers. I sell my silkie chicks for $15 to $20 each depending on color and quality. I have spent an ungodly amount of money on acquiring the stock I have. People know what they are buying when they spend that much on a chick. Otherwise they would buy silkies at the feed store.

Quote: I just realized that you are in Tucson.. This neighbor has no interest in breeding, he want a rooster that is people friendly.. Big enought to chase off the feral cats.

Shoot, About the only roos I've ever had that wouldn't chase off feral cats were either baby chicks or the polish who couldn't see them. Of course my own cats are even better at chasing them off.

For that matter, post on the facebook groups Original Poultry Bid and Poultry Bid. Current photos will be better than chick photos. And if you have extra purchasers, then send them my way.

Well, I just moved my chicks into the house. It is 90 degrees outside right now, and probably 10 degrees hotter in the shed where I had the brooder set up, even with light off and a fan running. When I went to check on them a little while ago, they were panting. Transferred them to a cardboard box, then took the opportunity to clean out the brooder and put in fresh litter. Set it up in my living room, now I need to figure out some way to suspend the light. They really appreciated some fresh (cold) water!

LOL! That's what my dog is for. He doesn't mean to hurt them, he just wants to play. He gets bored when they get all soggy and quit moving. My neighbor has a mini-graveyard in his front yard now!

Hello everyone! I'm in San Tan Valley area and I have two broody silkies. One already hatched out some babies. Some all silkies,, polish silkie crosses, one full EE, one EE silkie cross. These are all about 2 weeks old and my other hens eggs are just starting to pip. She is sitting on 1 silkie egg and 7 EE eggs. Not sure if they are full or crosses yet. I only have silkies, polish and an EE so it will be full or a combo of one of those. I am looking for good homes for these guys. I want them to be pets not to grow for food. They are all very well tempered. Please let me know if you are interested. Thanks!

PS from my very limited experience silkies can't be beat for broodiness I've had 100 percent hatch rate they're awesome mamas!

Hatching is fun! And addicting.. Except with shipped eggs it can be very frustrating when nothing hatches! I need the 12 step program too.. I am doing the same as you, I want all the colors of eggs! ALL of them! Haha...and then some pens of other breeds too.. I told my husband I only needed 4 pens.. Wait no 5.. Maybe 6... Ha.. :D

I have paid $30-$50 for standard bred birds; that is those that at least approach the SOP (there being no perfect bird). the difference between standard bred and hatchery stock is totally shocking; especially when you have them side by side.

In your grandpa's day 25 cents was probably the going price for straight run chicks.

And if I didn't already have 3 silkie roos I would have been looking seriously at those two.
I'm not saying there isn't rooster that are worth more that $10 I'm just saying I wouldn't spend that much because I wouldn't get that out of them. If I were breeding show birds, I would probably pay up to $50 for a rooster, but I don't so I won't.

In my grandpa's day it was 25 cents for a chick and $5 for a hen (man I wish they were still that cheap)

Moma Hen Chris, I don't mean to sound like um saying your rooster aren't worth $20, I'm sure they are, I'm just saying I wouldn't buy them for that much, no disrespect ment :)
