Arizona Chickens

I'll be at the Tucson meeting tonight.

Back from a 4-day trip and all the chickens are fine.  Guess they figured out the water cups after all!

Those brahma cockerels are total jerks.  They are going to be processed this weekend.  In fact, I think I'm going to do a couple tomorrow night--I'm so done with them and their blasted...maleness.  Happened fast, hormones must have kicked in.

Yay glad all went well. Mine do great with the cups.

So does that mean a chicken fry at your house. ?? :))

Awesome! Thank you, I already candled at day 18, just yesterday and removed all that weren't fully dark. There were 8 left. I will move the water and food closer so that she does not need to get off the nest to get it and give her a week.
This is my first hatch and even though the broody is doing all the hard work I wanted to know what to expect.
Thank you!

I have my first broody and this is our first hatch. We started allowing her eggs on 5/4 so hopefully by 5/25 we have chicks. I need to get with the program and learn how to candle etc. So far she is a good broody off once a day that I know of and thats when I feed then she is right back at it.

Up until a week ago I was getting an egg a day from each of my girls. Now I'm getting about 1/2 that. Is anyone else noticing drop in egg production? Could it be heat related?

This morning our caretaker told us she was going to have to leave at the end of this month

She has been such a help but also has to work and found she just didn't have time to help us and do her job. So we are looking for another caretaker again, sigh.
If anybody knows someone who wants to be a poultry farm and gardens caretaker, PM me. It is a live on site, work-rent kind of arrangement. We need someone retired ideally, with their own income. Most of the caretakers we have had just didn't stay long term because they needed more income and didn't have time to do farm work plus job work. I think it is time to cut down the number of chicks I have out here for sure.

We have been doing a lot of remodeling to our coops but yes we have seen a significant drop I am just not sure if its the weather or the remodeling.

We will put the word out for you.. :yiipchick

Attended the meeting....I'm not too happy. Three rabbits and 8 chickens? Really? No answers on my baby rabbits. If I have three girls,"visit" the buck on occasion, I will be in compliance until the kits come. My question was when do the kits "count" as rabbits? I harvest at 16 weeks...why can I have two 70 lb goats but only 3 rabbits? That makes no sense.

Would someone who attended give a summary of what was discussed for those of us who couldn't go? I am not in the city, but like to know what the blasted bureaucrats are up to.

It could be heat and the lack of humidity combined. Make sure they have shade and a dust bath. Also may be the onset of molt. Some of my pullets went into molt earlier than normal this year. I think it is because it has been so dry and windy up here. Hens hate wind. Stress can easily throw a one egg a day layer into a one egg every 3 day layer.
