I have a 12x12 run with 8 little ones in it. I took down there coop yesterday so they could have more air flow. We sewed and hung a cloth roof over everything so they have shade and don't share their food with other birds. They have a few logs and a huge spool as well as a couple pieces of wood leaned for shelter. I hung watermelon yesterday and they picked it clean. Today I hung cabbage but they have t touched that yet. No nesting boxes yet because they're all you d and don't need/use them yet. They like to Roost on the spool. I plan to make a couple nests in the corners and I'll build them where the wind and rain can't get in. They seem to enjoy this set up. They really just want to do whatever they want so that's why I guess.

Especially in Eagar!  Start a campaign of spreading the knowledge!  Otherwise you just have to be a duck and let the stuff roll off your back.

Q

Honestly, if you can't do that in Eagar, I don't know where you can, and still have a community...like somewhere (not 20-50 miles away) to send your kids to school, local stores, etc.  Shame that even in a rural town like Eagar, chickens are an issue.

This is an issue in Eagar? Holy sheez. People piss me off more and more every day. How do they think that people got to where we are today? LIVESTOCK

What I find so funny is only two houses awnay there are horses and on the other side of them is open land so its not like I'm in the middle of town. But if you drive down Main Street you will inevitably come across the chickens that free range on the sides of the road. This morning while doing chores outside one of my girls was singing her egg song and I hear the neighbor that called the police in me saying "There goes that d@#n rooster again. She said she got rid of it. Looks like its time to call the cops again." To my delight my amazing 7 year old says very loudly " Mom they must not be very smart. Roosters don't sound like that they're way louder. That's just Matilda singing about eggs!". :celebrate I gave him the biggest hug and took him inside and made his favorite breakfast.

I have two neighbors who are the main problem. One has hated my family for as long as I remember something about my dad getting promoted before her husband so she takes it out on me. She is also one of those who enjoys causing drama. The other is a man who works nights and therefore feels everyone that lives around him should be quiet while he sleeps(with all his doors and windows open). He is the one who has called the police on me over 15 times never once knocking on my door to let me know they bothered him.

ETA-because I can't spell

K9Dave can you post a pic of how you did your shade cloth? My girls are the same way if I put watermelon out it's gone in seconds but cabbage will hang for days.

Hi,
Planning to build my own coop, but I want some help for the design
1.) it's in AZ so it needs to be able to be cool
2.) I want to be able to easily clean and access the birds
3.) it if possible could be "hidden" or incognito
4.) it should have a design so the chickens can easily run or have space to be relatively free
Thanks all,
P.S. Feel free to post pictures of your coop

Hey @chickybobby , welcome. Is the reason that you are wanting a hidden coop because you aren't allowed to have chickens in your neighborhood (HOA)? If so, just to let you know, even just a couple chickens can get pretty noisy. Especially when they lag their eggs. Having chickens is nigh on impossible to keep a secret from neighbors.

As far as coops go, here are a few pictures of ours. We are in an HOA that allows chickens in "pet numbers" provided they aren't a "nuisance" (noise, smell, etc.). And the coop had to be the same height or lower than our block walls. I chatted with my neighbors beforehand and they were supportive (even if they assumed I was a little "off') and I asked them to feel comfortable approaching me if they ever had any issues. Neighbor issues can be really bad (as you've probably seen) if you have unsupportive neighbors, so it's best to start off on the right foot.

Our coop though has a mister system and automatic waterer. I leave the panel to the roost open all the time during summer to increase air flow. We also have set up extra shade sails for the summer to give them a little more shade in the free range area. I use the misters whenever it's over 105 until we hit monsoon season and then I use ice blocks.

AY, CARAMBA! After feeding and watering the animals, this morning, I refilled the sump tank in my greenhouse from my "outside" IBC. I then started refilling the outside IBC from the hose. While waiting for it to fill, I watered my plants outside the greenhouse, then did some puttering around inside the greenhouse (us old guys do a lot of puttering!). I then noticed one of my upper growbeds was overflowing. The way I have the plumbing set up, the only way it can overflow is if the drains are plugged. On the south end of the growbed, there are two 2" diameter drains with a 10" standpipe going into the lower growbed. Reaching in through the top, I found the standpipes completely clogged with roots. No matter how hard I pulled, I couldn't pull the roots out. So, I went to the bottom end and pulled the drain lines off, and this is what I pulled out.... I guess tomorrow I should do some more puttering and check the drain pipes on the other upper grow bed!!
Checked the other upper grow bed, and it was similarly clogged, but not as bad. I threw a couple of these "root ropes" into the chicken run, so far no interest. On the same upper grow bed as the original post, I planted some chocolate mint at the "north" end, where the fish tank feeds into the bed. Chocolate mint is kind of notorious for trying to colonize the entire planet. Mine actually grew runners through the fish tank drain tube, and was growing into the fish tank! Yes, fish water is loaded with nutrients plants love!
