This pretty girl laid her first egg today!

Here it is next to an egg from one of my 2 year old EEs. It's tiny (only 32 grams) but I was so happy to see it.

Today was a hardest day since I started raising chickens. I lost Two birds to the heat, both just started laying! It was devastating and a bit hard to get over with. I had a water leakage this morning so I turned the water off to fix the leak. When I was done I left in a hurry to meet my friends for lunch. They were all well when I left at 12:15pm. I had lunch and then did grocery shopping afterwards and got home at 2:40pm, in about two hours I found two dead birds! Only then I realized the mister was not on. I always think musters are nice to have but didn't think it as difference between life and death. SAD!!!!!

Now I have three vacants to fill anybody let me know if you have pullets for sale.

Agh, condolences from us.. :hit

Sorry to hear that! Where are you located? I have a lot of nice pullets for sale, various breeds: Black Copper Marans, Barred Rock, red sexlinks, Blue Copper Marans, Delaware...need to thin out my birds. I'm in NW Tucson. PM me if interested.

Thanks! I really need to thin out my growing birds but it has been so hot, I haven't wanted to do any culling. Still have a lot of pullets to sell and put an ad on CL, trying to sell the whole lot of Delawares. Hard to find someone local serious enough into breeding them to SOP. We put 4 young birds that I processed several days ago into the solar cooker this morning. Beats having the oven on in this heat

My husband is thinking of making a solar cooker and a smoker. (in his spare time) lol. we will see. I plan on processing the extra Aloha roo's that I do not keep for the Aloha project. I found out how to can chicken. I want to try some for use in pot pie and soups this fall/winter.

Ouch. That is rough.

For what it's worth, this is exactly why I don't use misters or other artificial cooling. I let my birds acclimate to the heat instead. You never know when the power will go out, or the misters will clog. And a bird that is used to a cooling system will struggle more in the heat than a bird that has acclimated.

I am so sorry for your loss. I am with MagicChicken. I only use wading pans. I do not use ice or misters or anything just a lot of shade, ventilation and water. I am so very sorry. I have some chicks that are EE (they might be AM but since I have both in the coop they will all be EE). DesertMarcy has pullets for sale too. lots of breeds. Hope you find what you are looking for. Sry again for your loss.

Maybe there are other things you can do to help prevent overheating? Unless you have a large number of birds, the loss of three in such a short period makes me wonder if your set-up needs a bit of tweaking. If you post pictures, we might be able to offer some constructive suggestions for improvement.
