Arizona Chickens

@CityFarm Thankx :)
I have coocoo ? Marans, blue splash marans, ameraucana, barred rocks, copper marans, rhode island reds.
I love them all but the blue splash and rhodes are the friendliest and let us pet them like crazy.

I hope to hatch more blue splash and americaunas
Welcome btw.

I had to get rid of my RIR because they all turned out to be roosters. Boo. My Delawares are my nicest. They try to come in through the doggy door, walk right under my feet to where I'm afraid in gonna squish them. The BO are pretty tame as well.

I have always wanted a Delaware. If you ever have to rehome her, please keep me on your list..
& yes for the BO.. They are so sweet.. We have one baby with the chiks from AZKAT.. The 2 chicks that looked like PBR are SLW.. :thumbsup when we first got them the legs did not look like the SLW.. I hope thy are sweet!!

I'm sorry she died.  :(   First, I don't think it was the neighbor.  Chickens can die suddenly for all sorts of reasons and they sometimes die in the nest box.  Like Macboat suggested, we need more info.  How had she been acting before this?  Was she eating normally.  The new conditions don't sound as good as the situation before, the run is too small for that many birds and the coop being in the direct sun might be problematic.   Does the inside of the coop get hotter than the ambient temperature just outside of it?  Is the water out of the sun at all times?  I would work on expanding the run size and making shade for the coop as soon as possible.

Did you happen to check the condition of her crop?

We will be putting up a shade cloth today and installing a chicken fountain. The actual coop area is not completely enclosed and there is ventilation/breeze. I will keep a closer eye on the girls today and make sure they are adjusting well.

@mac; Did you get as far as when they ask you what type of feed you use?

@CF; yes, I figured it was Purina, but I still want my free bag!

Purina = GMO = :sick

X2!!!!!
Don't even get me started on Monsanto.. Pure evil!! Also bill gates, he wants to develope Mosquito's that will inoculate humans.. Unbelievable.. Like is said don't get me started..

Good for you!  I think you'll be happy about that decision in the long run.   What sounds so crappy about that Purina scheme is they knew they were going to disqualify a certain number of people for various criteria, yet they did not ask those questions first.  It doesn't even sound like they were up front that certain people would be disqualified.  Instead, they waited until the end when they got all of the info they needed without having to pay anything out.  Certainly not to anyone who already used the product which underscores the blatant ploy of the tactic.

Exactly! The Purina Company must think its customer pool consists of a bunch of blithering idiots. I definitely would go out of my way NOT to spend money with a company that treats its potential customers so poorly. What a transparent ruse!

Both of; VERY well SAID.. Could not agree more.. I must add that most people do not educate themselves.. This is why I personally LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this site.. Free education..sometimes when arguing a issue that the other person, they can not GET it, finally just have to say, " ignorance is bliss" & not waist any more time with them.. Not that this applies, still thinking about Monsanto :sick

so my hubby saw a snake in my ameraucana coop last night. YIKES!!! He searched and searched but it took off so guess I will be out tonight when it cools down to see if it is back. I hope I catch him and can relocate him across the road if it is not a rattler..

sry I wont re locate rattle snakes.

Ok I really really want to feed non GMO feeds but we cannot afford that much per bag. It is crazy like $31-38 per bag at my feed store. I feed 2 50# bags of feed a week. We also feed our goats, guinea pigs, rescued dogs, cats and rabbit. I would be interested in going in with a couple of ppl and buying some organic feed. We plan on eventually doing fodder along with our FF but we need to finish the area first. They just laid off 27 ppl at my husbands work. He was lucky but they still have not hired him on perm so although we are thankful we must wait a few more months to finish things we have planned. I hope to be GMO free chicken raiser soon. Do they eat any less of it?

The Tucson Organic Feed Co-op should be putting together an order in a couple of weeks, for delivery in early August. I can forward you the email when it arrives. The Tucson pickup location is near Wetmore/La Cholla. Their feed runs $25-30 per 50 lb bag, depending on what you are getting. They also have feed for other types of livestock. And human-grade bulk flour and whole grains.

My birds prefer the Modesto feed but I can't afford it retail and don't use enough to warrant buying by the pallet. The organic feed at my local feed store is priced at a similar price per bag as the organic feed co-op, but the feed store bags are only 40 lbs. instead of 50 lbs from the co-op, so the feed store feed is way more expensive.

Wondering how much longer I can afford to feed non-GMO.

Maybe you and carnivore can get together for a Modesto order? I'd love to be able to split Modesto orders if it wasn't such a PITA to have it delivered here. Some of the drivers get in and out fast, they know how to turn around in the tight space. Others get all stressed out over it. I like to get other people on board with organic and away from the GMO feed. Maybe if people wanted to split, and could come here when it is delivered and help me move and stack my portion in exchange for getting a better price?? I have picked up 100 bags and moved one at a time into my building--whew that is a lot of weight moved.

Well, looks like I can buy it at OK for a while yet! My new place has a smallish hay barn where I can store feed, but I want to do some repairs and bugproofing before I start using it for that. Right now, I am storing my feed in 20 gallon plastic trash cans with snap on lids, They comfortably hold a 50# bag, but that's about all.
My birds are still growing, but right now, a 50# bag lasts about a week and a half. So, 100 bags, 150 weeks, 3 years?

I have the answer!!  I JUST NEED MORE CHICKENS!      :ya

Oh & don't forget about that woman your new place has.. That sentence is so. :lau
I'm still cracking up over that.. More chickens.. Ducks, dude, ducks.. they are so fun..
