Arizona Chickens

Are there any concerns to feed young chicken high protein feeder? I am thinking of feed them game bird starter, which has 30% protein.

Hi everybody!

Is there anyone in AZ who has had issues with mold growing either in the coop/house or on the ground in the pen/enclosure?
The moisture is obviously terrible in monsoons. I am trying to keep everything as dry as possible but it is really tricky. Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
If there is too much moisture and too much organic matter you will get mold. Adding sand to wet areas will help them to dry faster and drain water away. You might want to get some too put in any areas that are getting moldy.

Oh, and welcome!

That is pretty high. What kind of chickens, and what purpose? I use 22% for black Jersey Giants, because they are slow growing but will grow big, use the same feed for Cochins, for the same reasons. I might use something that high in protein for Cornish meaties, but that would be about it.

I've been busy so haven't got to post here in a while. I set a bunch of quail eggs a couple of weeks ago and now I got 45 quail chicks! Cute and always hungry! They were eating FF right after hatching. I'm wanting to keep the biggest ones so I'm not sure when to get rid of the extras. For now I'm enjoying having some babies to fuss over.

The nice thing about brooding chicks here is they rarely need a heat lamp on them, just a bit at night for the first week.
omgosh how cute!!!!!!

Just let me know and ill give you my address to send them or we can meet up some where.

They are already to old to ship so we would have to meet up someplace.

That is what I feed my quail chicks, don't know if that is OK long term for young chickens. Maybe if they are getting plenty of veggies?

Mornin yall, i was wondering if anyone would have any Texas Lilac seeds they could send me or any other kind of plant seed i could plant in my run that the chickens could eat but not destroy?

I think that is what I have but no idea how to get seeds from them.

Maybe there are some now in the AZ BYC seed box? We have a seed box that travels from member to member and you might find something in there. Of course, anything you plant in the run will have to be protected until the growth tips get out of reach of the chickens. I have grape vines planted in my run and the chickens love the leaves--and the grapes too!
Gallo do you have any idea how to get seeds from them?

You could probably get by planting them right now. They'd do best if planted in the winter or early spring, but as long as you watered them regularly they should do well. I think I planted mine at about this time of year, maybe a bit earlier. If you were closer, I'd give you a vine I made from cuttings.
Hey if you have any extra cuttings I would love them Gallo. :)

@little chicken did you meet up with the Gazebo coop lady in GV when you went to get your goat? She hasn't been on here for a while and I can't remember her user name. I was going to check with her to see if she wanted the seed box as well.
I went to Phx to get my goat and I will be going to Kingman sometime hopefully in Aug to get my piggies but no I have not met her yet.

Hello AZ chicken lovers! I am new to the chicken world and am enjoying my 3 babies so far. I taught Kindergarten and we hatched chickens every year, and this year I decided to keep a few. Sadly, I think I have 2 cockerels and 1 pullet. I'm looking forward to learning lots from everyone, and especially having the AZ group to turn to for desert questions. Here's a picture of my group:
