Arizona Chickens

I havent heard anything about Trichomonas killing off the hawk population, i know that Coopers and Red-tail are migratory but dont migrate until September or October not sure about the Harris. I have a Red-tail that always visits my house a few times a week.

Most of our Arizona Cooper's and Red Tailed hawks are permanent residents, especially the urban hawks.

Sounds like a Cooper's. Did it look like this guy?

Thats Purty!

We've had a brown hawk with red on it's sides hanging around the last few days. I'm not sure what kind it is, but it's not very big (if you don't count the beak and talons) Lol!

Where is the sensor located? I think it may get too wet if the sensor is away from misting area.
I plan to place the vulnerable parts in the rafters of my coop about five feet over and above the misters themselves. I used outdoor parts as much as possible and put everything in a water tight box.

Do you do falconry? I'm a big fan. My wife's uncle is the head vet at the Dallas Zoo and his wife is way up in the birding community and I think she does all the aviary stuff at that same zoo. My wife and her mother leave to go with them to the Galápagos Islands in October. We are animal lovers.

No, no falconry; It's always interested me though. It's such a huge commitment and that has kept me from it. I was really captivated by the idea of it as a kid after reading the book, "My Side of the Mountain." I haven't thought about that book in years, but falconry made me think of it. It was one of my favorites.

That hawk in the pics learned to go after doves in the run, where they rarely escaped. I haven't seen evidence of it being in there for probably a year now. It was fearless of me and let me walk right up to it to take pictures.

That's exciting that your wife gets to go! I've been to Ecuador a couple times but never made it out to the islands, I hope to get there someday.

I LOVE THAT BOOK! I still have my copy somewhere! I think you are the first person I've ever found that even heard of it!

It is a huge commitment. That also kept me from pursuing it further. I have read a few books on the subject but haven't heard of that one. I trapped as a kid for pelts occasionally and was very into wolves so I've read a lot of the books dealing with those. I held a training course at Nellis AFB once and they were having a Falconry get together close so I went. They were roosting their birds out in front of the holiday inn. I fell in love and still am. Doubt I'll ever commit to owning/training one though. I had a ***** drug Dog in the back of my pick up and each handler was taking their birds to show how they hunt for everyone to see. We were all going to walk around and flush stuff for the bird. We flushed a jackrabbit and boom there this thing goes. Have to look it up again the name of this bird but when it was in the air, for a sec it almost went for my dog back in the truck. The owner said he would've killed the dog too as this bird is known for bringing down large game. I think it was a Harpy Eagle.
