It is a huge commitment. That also kept me from pursuing it further. I have read a few books on the subject but haven't heard of that one. I trapped as a kid for pelts occasionally and was very into wolves so I've read a lot of the books dealing with those. I held a training course at Nellis AFB once and they were having a Falconry get together close so I went. They were roosting their birds out in front of the holiday inn. I fell in love and still am. Doubt I'll ever commit to owning/training one though. I had a ***** drug Dog in the back of my pick up and each handler was taking their birds to show how they hunt for everyone to see. We were all going to walk around and flush stuff for the bird. We flushed a jackrabbit and boom there this thing goes. Have to look it up again the name of this bird but when it was in the air, for a sec it almost went for my dog back in the truck. The owner said he would've killed the dog too as this bird is known for bringing down large game. I think it was a Harpy Eagle.

Yes it is a huge commitment. My deceased partner was a falconer. He liked to fly Cooper's Hawks but also flew Harris Hawks. He said the difference was like the difference between a sports car and a sedan. He would get up a 4 in the morning to go fly the bird in the summer. There used to be great rabbit hunting right near us, now it is Costco and a bunch of other businesses

He would travel across the country to go to the meets. Very few people would be able to handle a Harpy Eagle. I still have his collection of falconry books. Most of the other falconry related stuff and personal things I donated to the Archives of Falconry in Idaho http://peregrinefund.org/falconry He is on their Wall of Remembrance. Bill Girden. Died in 1994 at the young age of 37. OMG, it has been 20 years! I still miss him

He was one of those special people.

I've automated the mister for the chickens when it gets above 100 degrees! I'm going to look at adding a photocell to it so it shuts off at night, since it's still currently above 100 degrees right now at 9PM.

I am sorry and feel for your loss. Hope that it brought back some good memories talking about Falconry. I had posted earlier but it never showed up. ???

Good morning..
Have new neighbors & the rooster.. Well, I am trying the collar.. He took it off the first night. Then by the second day trying he got his beak stuck. I took it off, now just need to try the right fit.. I believe I am leaving it to loose, I am just a bit apprehensive.. He is fine.. When we first put it on he tried to walk backward.. Poor little guy.. I don't want to get rid of him... I have no time to catch up on threads.. Stay cool everyone..

My brother made a gallon glass pickle jar full of fermented feed for my girls im going to see if they like it later on today lol.

Just remember if they don't take to it right away to keep offering some everyday. You can also add yummy stuff to get them to try it like fruits and veggies. My DH puts shredded carrots in our FF for the girls.

No, no falconry; It's always interested me though. It's such a huge commitment and that has kept me from it. I was really captivated by the idea of it as a kid after reading the book, "My Side of the Mountain." I haven't thought about that book in years, but falconry made me think of it. It was one of my favorites.

That hawk in the pics learned to go after doves in the run, where they rarely escaped. I haven't seen evidence of it being in there for probably a year now. It was fearless of me and let me walk right up to it to take pictures.

That's exciting that your wife gets to go! I've been to Ecuador a couple times but never made it out to the islands, I hope to get there someday.

My neighbor behind our house was a falconer until his health faltered. He often had to come over to retrieve a young falcon that had made a kill in our yard. I don't know what kind of falcon he had, but it wasn't very big and usually caught doves or sparrows.

Anyone know a good way to get rid of mosquitoes? We have thousands of them right now and my dogs get covered in them when they go outside and then they bring them inside and there driving us nuts.

Today is day 10 for my incubating eggies and I decided to try candling again. Much better this time, figured out the process a bit better. I saw movement in some, whoo hoo! I even managed to get a decent look into those dark dark Marans eggs tonight. Looks like one isn't doing much, but I'm going to wait a bit longer on it. The Ameracaunas all have veining, large dark areas and some even showed some movement. Looks like so far I have 13 viable eggs out of the original 15.

I read that planting Catnip is good. What I read said that Catnip is 10x stronger than Citronella and therefore better at repel Mosquitos.

I'm calling out for help here from my fellow valley BYCers.

My wife and I have put in our 30 day notice so if you all wouldn't mind keeping an ear/eye open for us a new place. The house we're in is too large and we're downsizing. The reason I'm asking here is because of course we're looking for a place that we can keep the chickens.

Looking for something small like 1000 sq ft and smaller, that allows chickens and our dog. The DW works downtown but doesn't mind driving. Open to anywhere in the valley pretty much.
