Good morning, I noticed with this cooler weather we are having all my hens are laying.

My chicks won't arrive until tomorrow, I was SO hoping the would get here today.

My first egg. I wasn't here to witness so I don't know who layed it but my wife heard the song. At 6:30pm this evening. ??? That's not common right? Figured it might be my new BR laying her first since I got her. Whoever it was made it to the door of the nesting box but not in. Should I put the egg in one of the boxes for them to see?

Still need to clean it but will look hat up in a bit. I'm too eggcited right now. My wife (never been into the chickens) was very eggcited. Texting me and happy for her.

Also they have matching outfits.

Isn't it grand when you get an egg!! I use golf balls in my nests for newbies. Many use wooden eggs as well. Seems to call them to the nest! Enjoy

RIP Ella. My little Leghorn had just started laying last week - and was presenting us with 55-60 gram eggs every day since. This morning when I went to see how the girls fared through yet another rain storm last night, she was on the floor of the coop in total rigor. There was no evidence of any external culprit. Yesterday, she was fine - laid her egg around noon, was eating (including blueberries out of the hand) and drinking. I've lost hens before, but both times they were acting a bit "off" beforehand, so their deaths didn't come as a total shock like this one did.

Yes, mine is a Black Australorp.  I also had 3 Black Copper Marans(BCM)  but two turned out to be roosters so I had to re-home them.  It really looks like you have a pullet and a cockerel there.  Also, my cockerels had a lot more copper than the pullet.  The pullet hardly had any but it's starting to show more now as she gets older.

They both have feathery legs on the outside. I'm aS so hoping he was a she. Lol. I'm going to try to keep him as long as he doesnt get to hard to handle. I'm willing to try the Velcro band to stifle the crow. Maybe they are attainable. Ha ha. Any thoughts?

Black Copper Marans pullets often show no color. If in doubt, check the legs. Marans will have feathered legs, and feathers on the outside toe. Australorps will have clean legs.

P.S. little coloring on a cockerel at this point is a good thing. they tend to get more color as they get older, and often end up overcolored.

I am curious how he'll turn out. No crowing yet and still runs from the older hens.
