Arizona Chickens

We've had some trouble with my elderly greyhound making trouble. I'm not confident in my ability to get them back in the pen at any time if we have to leave or if Bailey has to go out ... so for now ... they are in the pen for their own safety.

From what I've heard Marek's is progressive. My vet said eventually she'll lose all muscular control.

Oh, I just meant that it would probably be fine to give them some of your composting material. Our chickens are penned right now as well because of a bobcat making the rounds, so I know how it goes. Sometimes they have to stay in. I bring mine wheelbarrows full of leaves to dig through and other treats since they can't go about their usual routine right now.

It sounds like you're making her as comfortable as possible, poor girl.

I was not feeling well tonight, my glucose level dropped to 59 {very dangerously low}. I have lost over 20#, deepening on time of day 22# to 27#. I am in the progress of adjusting my meds for Type 2 diabetes do to the weight loss. So tonight when I went down to put my girls to bed I left them feeling so much better. I have to scoop them up and carry then to their coop. Their coop is to big and will not go thru the door of the kennels. They cooed and talked to me, all soft and snugly, their presents radiated relaxation. I didn't want to put them down, but, sadly when I arrived at the coop, they let me know they wanted to go to bed. :love Between my girls and my little boy, I have a lot of heart and feel warm medication. I am so lucky to have them.

FYI: I have dropped 1 med completely. I will be calling my doctor tomorrow to review my meds again. It is a work in progress. I have not been a Type 2 for long and Diabetes dose not run in the family. I plan to be off meds complete and control my glucose by diet. I have to figure out if meds or something I did/did not do made it drop. Well enough of that downer stuff. This is expected and being watched.

Isn't it amazing? Chickens have provided me with so much relaxation and a deep sense of calm that I've never experienced before. It's proven that having animals in our lives helps us be healthier. :)

Glad to see that you've been able to drop a med! That's awesome!

No idea about her chickens yet really. Been moving too much to worry with them. A few of them look a little rough and most likely need to go through a molt to grow some more feathers. I'll find out how old they are and maybe do some hatching of my own since I inherited the use of the owners incubator and I have the broody.

If you need eggs to hatch I will be having EE eggs for sale. They are from wheaten and blue wheaten roosters over RIR, PBR, EE, Light Brahama etc hens.

Since I have never had a broody hatch - I have a question about feed. Should I use medicated chick starter for the new babies?? Just thinking ahead as hatch time will be here before we know it!!! Usually I have chicks and just use regular starter/grower. Thoughts??

Anyone have any fertile EE, Ameraucana or BA eggs they wouldnt mind sending me I want to try out my two incabators that I have. I have some fertile mallard eggs but they have been in my fridge for a few months not sure if there still good lol plus my EE needs some new friends lol.

I have only had a broody raise chicks once so far (much easier, btw) and I just fed them regular starter/grower. Actually, I've never used the medicated feed. If you feed the medicated the mama will eat it too and when you integrate the whole flock will get it.
