Arizona Chickens

I am so sorry for your loss. I am not surprised how you feel, most of us probably have gone through the same thing. I have. She was your beloved pet. So sorry.

Thanks so much for your responses. I had to put her to sleep today. She probably had pneumonia but was too far gone to help (without spending a fortune and with no guarantee.) I loved that **** bird so much, I almost spent the money but the vet wasn't very hopeful.

Gallo, I didn't break her broody, she did. That's when I suspected that something was wrong. Last time she gave it two full months. This time was about two weeks. Then she didn't return to the coop at dusk and it was all downhill from there.

Am a little surprised at how devastated I am over her loss.

Oh Mandy, I'm so sorry to hear this.

She was probably in a weakened state from being broody and succumbed to something in her respiratory tract. I hope whatever it was doesn't pass to your other birds. It's probably worth the money to keep a bottle of Tylan (and syringes) on hand. When reading the description of your girl's sounds it made me think of a pair of Buff Orpingtons I had that would get gurgly in their lungs at this time every year. I finally realized that it was a fungal infection from me wetting down the spot under their favorite tree everyday. I was able to treat it with fogged Oxine. If it was one of the respiratory viruses, there's not a whole lot you can do anyway beyond helping them fight other opportunistic infections.

I read that news story a couple days ago and I'm still disturbed by it.  That man should be immediately removed from any position of power.

I agree! I wonder what he does to people he arrests that might tick him off? And how did he get his job in the first place? He must be some sort of psychopath to pass the test requirements on his mental condition.

She is a little thing! I haven't had success relocating a broody, once they establish where they want to incubate their eggs it seems they won't go to another location you choose. At least that's been my experience with my orps. I replaced the fake eggs for the real ones but my girls are huge compared to your girl!
Can you meet me at the Pet Club near Bashas at 1:30? I look like an older Navajo woman but get mistaken often for Mexican ;-)
Is 1:30 still good for you?

Hey folks,

I am about 100 pages behind but in dire need of advice so I'm jumping ahead.  I also posted this in the sick chickens thread but you all are much more liable to respond quickly.

So my one year old silkie hen is in obvious respiratory distress. She started mewling like a kitten started a few days ago but I just thought she was weird. She's been off by herself all day today after breaking a nearly two week broody. Tonight she was sneezing (or she did once or twice) and now sounds like she's choking, wheezing/squeaking, and she keeps stretching out her neck like she's fighting for air / gaping . I've brought her in to the house (another chicken tried to attack her) but I have no idea what to do for her.  Her crop is empty but she's got plenty of flesh on her breastbone.

Anyone have ideas?  I don't have much of a medical kit here, just some blu-kote and electrolytes.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Oh boy that doesn't sound good.. You would need antibiotic for upper respitory.. Poor thing.. Keep us posted..
