Arizona Chickens

Oh please do tell how to make the wine? Is it easy???

It's easy to make, it just takes a long time to get the results, a year or more. Lol! Wines take longer than beer of course, but I started out using a recipe from this guy... http://winemaking.jackkeller.net/prickly.asp

I've only done it once before and it was passable, but I'm learning as I go, so I expect this year to be better! :D

Oooo thank you for the web site.. I am brewing, growing kombucha, kefir grains, both water & milk.. Might as well go for some wine.. :weee
Maybe might have to do it when we brew beer.. This sounds like a party..

Thanks so much for your responses. I had to put her to sleep today. She probably had pneumonia but was too far gone to help (without spending a fortune and with no guarantee.) I loved that **** bird so much, I almost spent the money but the vet wasn't very hopeful.

Gallo, I didn't break her broody, she did. That's when I suspected that something was wrong. Last time she gave it two full months. This time was about two weeks. Then she didn't return to the coop at dusk and it was all downhill from there.

Am a little surprised at how devastated I am over her loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Those little feathered friends get into our hearts for sure, don't they?

Hey folks,

I am about 100 pages behind but in dire need of advice so I'm jumping ahead.  I also posted this in the sick chickens thread but you all are much more liable to respond quickly.

So my one year old silkie hen is in obvious respiratory distress. She started mewling like a kitten started a few days ago but I just thought she was weird. She's been off by herself all day today after breaking a nearly two week broody. Tonight she was sneezing (or she did once or twice) and now sounds like she's choking, wheezing/squeaking, and she keeps stretching out her neck like she's fighting for air / gaping . I've brought her in to the house (another chicken tried to attack her) but I have no idea what to do for her.  Her crop is empty but she's got plenty of flesh on her breastbone.

Anyone have ideas?  I don't have much of a medical kit here, just some blu-kote and electrolytes.

Thank you for your thoughts.

I have used Tylan50 (most feed stores have it and needles)  in the past for this type of respiratory problem.  One shot in the breast for three days. I keep them inside in the nursery pen (usually they feel pretty good the second day) I've never had one quite as far along as yours.  Coughing gets my attention right away.  I'm not sure how much for your Silkie girl - probably about a half of a cc.  It has worked a number of times for me.

I have never used this, but glad you posted ths information up. Very helpful! :goodpost:
Sorry that I have to say, ducks,ducks,ducks...

So I went to OK feeds in Central Tucson today to get scratch and came home with two chickens. What is wrong with me? LOL

One was the last from a customer- returned flock, a cute adolescent silkie ... partridge coloring I think ... So fluffy. I couldn't resist. And I've been wanting an Easter Egger, but she's a bit younger than the other chickens. I think I need to build a small holding pen for sick ones, new ones, chicks, etc.

Pictures later!

So @a little chiken

After talking with the owner of the other Roos it appears now that we need to do something drastic. To clear up space for other plans we're getting rid of 10 adult Roos. I will take pics tomorrow and post them. There's a NN, RIR or Production Reds and not sure about the others as I'm pretty new to the chicken game. I'll need help with breeds.

She was raising them for dog food and she just likes raising chickens I think. Due to no freezer and the need to clear space immediately they have to go.

If anyone wants to do the culling and processing, maybe we could work something out with a split or any ideas?

There is a spotted roo that I don't know it's breed and a pretty BR roo that we're thinking about keeping. They're all seperated right now. How should I mix them or would it be easier to get a younger roo who may be gentler on a hen that's older than him?

How many roosters ? It is best to have help when processing, if you plan on using them for meat, & I know you do, so I will text you after I catch up on the Fourm..

I was thinking about all you chicken nuts who are looking for hatching eggs. I bought some hatching eggs off this site from a guy who is N NPIP certified in MI. They came well packaged and he has guinea, ducks , chickens both large and small and other stuff. They are only 3.00/doz and shipping was 16.00.I ordered 3 dozen and got 40 eggs. He also sent some rare Norwegian jaerhorn. I shared some with a friend and she has candled and says they are progressing.

The norwegian look a little like a golden cuckoo & I can't recall the other,
They are excellent layers, easily tamed & resistant to Marek's.. Oh & sex linked.. Huh,?? Not bad, what color of egg do they lay??
The rooster is gorgeous, if we can't find a jungle fowl maybe one of these??

I had a weird and kind of unnerving episode in my chicken run yesterday evening. I was out with my girls and one of my BR pullets was picking on a guinea keet so I caught the keet and sat down and put here in my lap to check her, she started holloring and squaking load I got her quite and made sure she was ok. After I was done checking her I look up and all 45 chickens and the 4 other keets were all standing infront and to both sides of me just staring at me, I was looked at them and said whats up to them and all I heard was this low like clucking growl sound coming from them I was like ok whats going on. I said to them its ok Papa isnt hurting her and I put her down and my Roo RugaRoo jumped up on my lap and everyone went on with there buisness, I thought I was a goner for a second there lol, crazy chickens.
Whoa, a gang of chickens keeping their eyes on you!

Sorry for your loss. I try not to get too attached.
