we are in Bisbee AZ, , but yes the sun in AZ is what we have to guard against to keep our hens healthy & not badly stressed out , just the reverse of living in a colder climate , in bisbee AZ it dos not get very hot here, most times, we got all our chicks at the feed stores in May of this year, raised them all in my kitchen in play pens until they became a hand full
& learned how to fly
...lol........lol....
then summer was arriving , we made them a nice area off the back porch with a covered dirt bath area, & a cooler on for them every day with an osculating fan , it gets pretty kool here at night , so none of our babies have had a hot day in there life, I just wanted to grow them with out any kind of stress, & now it will be winter soon , its not to cold here in winter , after we got our chicks my hubby had an emergency operation & was hospitalized for 12 days, he is fine now ,but we got a very late start on our chicken barn repairs PLUS IT RAINED ALL SUMMER LONG ENDING WITH 2 HURRICANES BACK TO BACK and our down town flooded ...lol.. an old barn was here on the property , so we took it down to the 4 walls to install all new ...lol.. the chicken barn is almost finished now , the new roof is on , we put sky lights in the roof so the girls will have natural lighting in winter in case they want to stay in , we still have to install the new wood flooring with metal sheets under the wood floor, so no invaders will get into the floor , next we are waiting on more fencing , we had several rolls of page wire we are using that was here when we bought the place , so soon the Chicky girls can go out side into their new Chicken barn...lol.... & out under their new covered yard , we made that for them out of our old car port frame...! that way they have a lot of shaded area for them to play & can also go out into a larger area to free range , the covered car port does make a good shaded area , or go out to free range or back into their barn to lay eggs when ever they want. so i cant wait for that day...
..lol... i love it when a good plan comes together....lol....
have a good one Dianna
