Arizona Chickens

we are in Bisbee AZ, , but yes the sun in AZ is what we have to guard against to keep our hens healthy & not badly stressed out , just the reverse of living in a colder climate , in bisbee AZ it dos not get very hot here, most times, we got all our chicks at the feed stores in May of this year, raised them all in my kitchen in play pens until they became a hand full

then summer was arriving , we made them a nice area off the back porch with a covered dirt bath area, & a cooler on for them every day with an osculating fan , it gets pretty kool here at night , so none of our babies have had a hot day in there life, I just wanted to grow them with out any kind of stress, & now it will be winter soon , its not to cold here in winter , after we got our chicks my hubby had an emergency operation & was hospitalized for 12 days, he is fine now ,but we got a very late start on our chicken barn repairs PLUS IT RAINED ALL SUMMER LONG ENDING WITH 2 HURRICANES BACK TO BACK and our down town flooded ...lol.. an old barn was here on the property , so we took it down to the 4 walls to install all new ...lol.. the chicken barn is almost finished now , the new roof is on , we put sky lights in the roof so the girls will have natural lighting in winter in case they want to stay in , we still have to install the new wood flooring with metal sheets under the wood floor, so no invaders will get into the floor , next we are waiting on more fencing , we had several rolls of page wire we are using that was here when we bought the place , so soon the Chicky girls can go out side into their new Chicken barn...lol.... & out under their new covered yard , we made that for them out of our old car port frame...! that way they have a lot of shaded area for them to play & can also go out into a larger area to free range , the covered car port does make a good shaded area , or go out to free range or back into their barn to lay eggs when ever they want. so i cant wait for that day...

Its so warm in my utility room that I'm more worried they won't be cool enough than it won't be warm enough. I probably will only use the heat lamp at night, but I will watch them to make sure they are warm enough. When I checked it today it was almost 100 under the heat lamp and it had been on all night. Do you guys think that is too warm? I know the temps are getting ready to start falling so I'll keep the thermometer in the brooder to make sure they are staying warm enough.

100 is too warm. Make sure they have plenty of room to get far away from the heat. They will be happier and healthier if they are not frying.

Kev, are you sure it's not some kind of root rot? That rapid wilting followed by death scenario sounds like the fungal root rots that have killed a bunch of my plants over the years. Just curious...

lol. Welcome.

I picked up my Omega 3 seed blend and some carrot seeds at @CityFarm
's house this evening.  Thanks @Timskins
for putting the order together and thank you @K9Dave
for delivering it! :clap I can't wait to get planting!  Now that is it finally cooling off a bit it's time to garden here.

I noticed several crews of landscapers around town were scalping grass today, so it's probably a good time to start the overseeding process for our lawns.  Makes for good winter chicken fodder!

Finally. I know that I'm late but I still need to set up my garden. It's just been to hot and humid to do it. Hopefully next week or so. The DW is leaving on the 3rd to go to the Gallapagos Islands for 13 days I think so I'll have some free time on my hands.

Thank you for your insight. DH absolutely refuses to build a coop, he thinks more coops equals more chickens - don't know where he gets these ideas! :D   The coops I've built so far have come from the Coops for Dummies book but I've either tripled or quadrupled them in size. Initially I was going for the size in the book but when I flagged it out in my pasture it looked so dinky so had to go with the supersize version. Then, of course, I modified them so they would accommodate my needs. I used a lot of the materials hubby had laying around - had no idea they were supposed to be for his projects at the time! Oh well, lesson learned - don't leave things laying around when I'm building coops for my chickens!

:goodpost:   My DH doesn't let me into his shop anymore!

X2. :thumbsup
