Arizona Chickens

100 is too warm. Make sure they have plenty of room to get far away from the heat. They will be happier and healthier if they are not frying.

Kev, are you sure it's not some kind of root rot? That rapid wilting followed by death scenario sounds like the fungal root rots that have killed a bunch of my plants over the years. Just curious...
No, I'm not 100% sure, but I didn't notice anything strange with the roots when I pulled the trees out, not that I know what to really look for. I guess what I'm thinking is it looked like a bare root tree, no galls or lumps.

I wish I had more time to look into it. I'm already behind on getting the fall garden planted and I've had this bee hive built for weeks and just sitting on my kitchen floor, need to get that placed too.

Any Guinea experts on here? I'm hatching Guineas and have some odd colored keets. Having not seen the parents since these were shipped eggs I do not know what colors they all are. I am also selling them if anyone wants any. I have 6 so far. 8 eggs still in the hatcher.

I want a pair please.

From what I remember about guineas, they will not stay on your property.. Of course unless you keep them contained.. However with that said, most people keep them for guard guinea dog's
They do better in groups..

This is day 22 for my Trader Joe eggs under my broody, Penguin.  So far, nothing.  She is pretty mellow about me poking around so I did that just now and didn't see anything happening. I'm picking up some chicks to give her today.  How long should I leave her on the eggs?

4 more days, did you candle them? If not that might help make a determination.. If they have not progressed, they were most likly mislabeled.. Keep us posted.. & what kind of chick you get??

Quick update: I am in Terrell, TX. I am at an almost quite RV park, other then the train across the Main Street, it is very peaceful. There s a small holding next door. I can hear thier roaster ever so often, an their ducks. They visit me 3 times a day.

I put grain out for them when they show up. One one them, I think the drake, warns me I am not really trusted and he is watching. Ernie decided to check them out yesterday. I pull him back in time, he was about to attack. :lau
Ernie didn't frighten him.

:frow thank you for the photo..
The drake is usually the quite one.. Our duck hen is the vocal one..

Hey Kev, I'm about to lose my seven year old Beauty Plum and I lost my pluots last year.  I talked to a very knowledgeable guy at my local nursery and he suspects I have two problems: grubs and borers.  The beauty plum almost certainly has borers from his description of the progression.   While I'm pretty organic, I think I have to go with a systemic poison to try to save it.  Even then I wonder if I'll be too late.  Did you ever get the nematodes?  I think that grubs are affecting the other stone fruit trees and I'm going to try and see if they help.  I was also reading on Arbico's site that they're having some success at using them to kill ants.

I haven't ordered them yet, haven't even got around to emailing the guy to ask him if its the right time. I believe the soil temp needs to be within a certain range which might be just right now down in Tuscon. Probably October here. What are/were the symptoms of the trees? Mine look fine for several weeks and then bam, within a week the leaves are wilted and the tree is dead. I've shaded it so I don't believe heat is an issue and the water in the soil checked out fine. I don't see any borer holes which also leads me to believe its a problem at the roots. I wouldn't fret to much about a systemic drench, Its better than losing the trees.

This sounds like "Texas root rot" trees go extremely quick.. Nothing you can do about it, citrus is one that is immune to this fungus.

Hey all! I haven't been around much, but I still have hens, for now. They don't lay worth a squat anymore and I'm about done with them. I have to buy eggs this week if I plan on having any this weekend. 8 hens can't even provide for a family of 3 and I can't see why I keep feeding them.
I started a thread, hoping to get some answers before they all hit the freezer. They are less than 2 years old.

 did ya all hear about the flea plague in Northern Arizona?? Near Flagstaff..
This bacterial disease is treatable if caught early.. It can effect cats, dogs & humans.. The dog's don't show symptoms but will be a carrier of these parasites.. :sick
