Arizona Chickens

Well, here they are. I know some of the pictures are blurry, but they are so active they don't really keep still long enough to take a picture of without blurring lol. The ones that looked weaker are better now. I can only barely tell which ones they were. One of them dunked his rear end in the water and spent an while cheeping because he didn't like being wet. When I found which one it was, I sat him under the heat lamp and all is well now. There are only two breeds. Buff Orpington pullets are the darker ones and the lighter straight run chicks are slow White Broilers. They are very easy to tell apart.

I wish I had geese! I'm in the thick of the city so just chickens and quail.

Thinking of some muscovy ducks though...

Is that a xolo in your avitar?

You're very welcome. Thanks for the seeds and the BSF.
Ever?

lol. Welcome.
Finally. I know that I'm late but I still need to set up my garden. It's just been to hot and humid to do it. Hopefully next week or so. The DW is leaving on the 3rd to go to the Gallapagos Islands for 13 days I think so I'll have some free time on my hands.
You can always just to some large pots, throw in some potting soil and seeds or starts. It can just be temporary to get your hands dirty before you put in a garden.

Lucky DW! That is one of the things on my bucket list.

Hi from the Tortolita mountains!

No, I'm not 100% sure, but I didn't notice anything strange with the roots when I pulled the trees out, not that I know what to really look for. I guess what I'm thinking is it looked like a bare root tree, no galls or lumps.
idunno.gif
I wish I had more time to look into it. I'm already behind on getting the fall garden planted and I've had this bee hive built for weeks and just sitting on my kitchen floor, need to get that placed too.
Texas root rot is everywhere here. Symptoms are sudden wilting and loss of leaves despite watering. It can actually be caused from too much water since that can give the fungus a boost in power with ground that never dries out. Deep infrequent watering is best for trees here, which can be difficult if the tree is in turf. Applying hydrogen peroxide to the root zone can help kill the fungus, but it also kills beneficial microbes too.

did ya all hear about the flea plague in Northern Arizona?? Near Flagstaff..
This bacterial disease is treatable if caught early.. It can effect cats, dogs & humans.. The dog's don't show symptoms but will be a carrier of these parasites..

Sure hope they stay up there!

My chicks have arrived! They are absolutely adorable. I talk to them and they come running to see what I'm doing. I turned on the heat lamp because it was 90 back there and adjusted it so it's only shining on a tiny spot.

No losses 27 arrived. There are a couple that are a bit weaker but they were eating and drinking after me showing them a few times. I'll keep an eye on them and the temp so it doesn't get too hot for them.
Congrats!

Gluten free!!?? What a bummer. All the really tasty stuff is glutenous.
sad.png
I wish you good luck, it's a hard adjustment. We haven't had anything with gluten (at least not intentionally) since April 2013. Don't miss it much at all now. Well, I guess I really do miss Rocco's pizza.
Many pizza places will do gluten free crust, just ask for it. If enough people do they will start carrying it.

I have totes with lids but I wanted to give them more room. I'm gonna get something to cover the kiddie pool I'm using so he can't get in and they can't get out.
Careful! They will be getting out of that pool in a week or two, then they will be everywhere!

Hi Gallo! Wow your dog sure is a beauty....certainly looks familiar ;) although I am quite jealous of her chicken manners! My boy is just plain rude to the chickens...thinks he rules the roost! He definitely enjoys a raw egg on top of his dry food for breakfast every once and a while though. Thanks for sharing your cute pic!

o man , thanks for that info. but thank goodness we dont have any of that here, or even visitors from that area,
roll.png
gosh , that sounds bad...? but i was told that fleas cant live in the normally dry conditions in AZ , maybe thats happening up there because they have a lot of shade from trees & large Forrest areas and maybe its not sooo dry up there...? so hmmmmmm....????
sad.png
what i used in FL to kill off fleas , since im allergic to most any chemicals & so to kill the fleas down there, & god FL has a lot of fleas & all other bugs geezzz , but I used salt & lots of chopped tobacco on all the floors leave on over night or even longer then vacuum a lot, for days after & burn the vacuum bag each day...! & so that helped if they got in to your house , but time will tell i guess...? about the life of fleas in AZ
hu.gif
but also Guinea hens eat ticks and fleas. we have a group of wild Guineas in our neighborhood, some time we have like 50 of them around , they have been here for years & have been up in numbers & down in numbers but my neighbor who tries to care for them tells me they had been killed off by some thing , and now their are only 2 young males left living in his trees this year , so i might just call around to see who has a few Guinea hens i can buy and let them go with those wild guys ...? to help keep them going, so yeah more Guineas around here should help to safe guard our neighborhood...!!! from any bugs....lol.... with the Guineas around most bugs dont stand a chance.......lol...

Has anyone had any problems with fairy eggs? I have a 6-7 month-old RSL, and that's all she ever lays! Eggs can come from a day to a week apart, and some are 15-gram light brown eggs while others are 30-gram darker eggs. But none of them have yolks
barnie.gif
She definitely seems ready - dark red comb and wattles, submissive squat whenever we approach their enclosure, spending time in the nest box (even when she's not laying). I've never had a chicken that didn't lay "whole" eggs from the get-go, so I'm not sure if this can be considered normal.
