Arizona Chickens

@k9dave

I may have just the kitten and for you!! :D

now she is been inside with me for about 5 weeks and a week and a half ago I just started toilet training her on the human Toliet, without a litter box. She likes to bite my toes to get me to play string or fight with her, she likes to catch flies, chase string, her mother's a feral cat, and I don't think I have anything stimulating to offer her as shes very very active! Let me know if you'd like to consider her!
she's pretty and she's been eating fairly healthy food. ;)

I'm not a huge fan of cats and my wife will surely try to tame anything I get so I'm really shooting g for something that's not the biggest human fan.

A coyote killed all of my chickens last night. It was my fault as I didn't close the run in my extreme laziness before bed. It just walked right in. I feel like the worst human being ever.

Oh man. I am sorry. Don't beat yourself up. Look what happened to DesertMarcy. It can happen to any of us.

Man - so sorry. Lately we've had packs moving through our area. I have done everything I can think of to shore up the outsides but I'm still cooping everyone at night - they hate it but I feel better. I sure do get an earful when I go to let them out of the run in the morning!! Don't beat yourself up - you'll never forget again!

I found them scattered and buried in the yard around 6am and the coyote was back at 6:30 looking for it's kills. My bf says we'll get more birds. Next time I'll be a stickler as I was 2 years ago about making sure they're locked up when we leave the house or go to bed. It's hard because they were not breeding chickens or meat chickens. They were pets. It's like having 8 pet cats die all at once. Now I have to be extra careful about letting the dog out because he's small so I have to go out with him until the coyote forgets our yard. Maybe by Jan I'll be able to order chicks for spring and by June the yard will be safe for day time free ranging again.

Good Morning

Here are the chicks I got at OK Feeds about a week ago.

Here is the golden-laced Wynadotte chick. S/he is the only one with mature enough feathering to see if its pretty.

The silver-laced Wynadotte isn't looking so lacey. (Middle row, black.) The gold (red?) sex link on the bottom right is named Brie. She has creamy white on her wing shoulders. She's the most friendly, too. Her wing feathers coming in don't have darker colors interspersed like the other sex links. The cuckoo Marans is at the top, looking pretty shabby.

I am so sorry for your loss. It's as if the predators have a radar that tells them that someone who is normally so careful slipped up just once, and they take advantage

Give yourself time to grieve, then pick yourself up and dust yourself off and start again when you are ready.

So yesterday I was driving around to local feed and hay spots looking for chicks. They only had BO, RIR and other ones that I always see. I wanted some Marans or something that I don't already have. Harder task than it sounds like. I was angry at Aden Hay Sales because I stopped, saw they had Marans and came back just before closing to pick mine up. I go to pay and tell the guy I want 3 Marans and he says we don't have Marans. I say well there's a sign out on te brooder that says you do and another couple were buying them before me as Marans. His girl counterpart says " YEH I just havent switched the sign yet" I turned and walked off. Customer Service is almost gone completely. Feed stores are on their way out.

So I came home and started looking on CL for chicks. Found some out here in QC but when I inquired about the breeds I was shocked by the price.

Buff Leghorns $15
Lavender Orps $20
Blue Frizzle Orp $15

is this normal? I asked why so high (because I had sticker shock) and was told because they're rare pure bred chickens. Wanted to check and see if this is normal?

Yes, however it all depends.. I think I had spoke to her as well.. If you just want them for eggs, the local feed store is your best bet.. $15 for a leghorn seems high to me.. You can see how quick you can loose your flock by a preditor. Where you are you have more of a chance of preditors..

Now again, if they are a pullet and close to laying desertmarcy has amazing birds. Her prices you can't beat. She feeds them organic feed. So they are going to be heathly..
