Arizona Chickens

It probably was a red-tailed hawk. They are the biggest around here, I'm pretty sure. They are beautiful, and I would hate to kill one. Wildlife is too important to keep around! We have a Cooper's Hawk that tries to catch wild quail in our yard. He doesn't seem interested in the big chickens. I just put the littles out in a new coop (super deal on craigslist!!!), but they are covered, and I bring them in the shed at night in their box. While I was collecting them at dusk the other day there was a massive great horned owl sitting in the Palo Verde tree above the coop. Same night a pack of coyotes started whooping (don't know what else to call it) either in our yard or the neighbors. I ran out in my tank and undies and bare feet to run them off. Glad it was 3:30 AM so the neighbors couldn't see me! I didn't see how many there were as they ran off before my eyes had a chance to adjust to darkness. From last week, here is a paw print of the predator that took away one chicken (Crannie, my fave.) and Pepito, the duck:

Another view:

That looks like coyote. I think I see the nail marks. Next time put a ruler next to the track before photographing since size helps with identification. It is hard to get clear tracks when the soil is rocky. I have the Peterson Field Guide to Animal Tracks. It is fun trying to figure out what makes the tracks. Not so fun having it take your birds, though.

I may be adding breeds needing help myself but chickens rather than ducks. Thinking of getting some Rhode Island Whites with the rose comb, Crevecouers & Campines. Was looking for Lamonas, White Hollands & Black Spanish but I don't think they exist anymore.

If you want to raise breeds that need help, get them from an established breeder, someone who is working to better the breed, not a big hatchery. Hatchery birds are just too far away from the standard for the breed and trying to breed them up will take many generations. Fine Feathered Friends Aviaries (Boyer family) in Tucson has White Faced Black Spanish. They will be at the Nov. show.

She did put her hand in the first photo for scale. It's not as exact as a ruler. Unless she has really small hands that is a good size print, which is why I thought large dog. Definitely a dog-type critter. Not a cat, unless the cat is wearing artificial dog feet to fool us...

If her hand is about same size as mine, that print is around 3" long. Coyote is 2-1/4" to 2-1/2", so you are probably right about it being dog.

Making a dog run today. My daughters' dogs are chicken killers, so they have to be penned up. Its sad, but I can't wait for them to be gone lol. I can't have them killing my babies. I should have known better though. I think one of them is a plott hound and they are brazen hunters. She sure acts like one and looks like one. She's a sweet dog, but can't be trusted with any prey animal. And who doesn't love to eat chicken...well other than vegetarians haha. (both of my daughters) The other is a german shepherd lab mix that is obsessed with chicken as treats. The first time he saw a chicken, he put his paw up for me to shake for his "treat".

My broilers are 5 weeks old today. And wow are they getting big. The way they are eating, I might need to buy one more bag of meat bird food before they are done. I can't wait to get them out in the coop. Their bedding gets stinky so fast. Plus then I can put my other babies in the bigger brooder. Right now I have 4 americaunas (2 weeks), I know probably easter eggers, and buff orpingtons (1 week). They can see each other, but they can't reach.

WEIRD COCK BEHAVIOR
OK, my biggest Jersey Giant cockerel is 6 months old now. He is about 18" tall and about 10 pounds. His comb and wattles are getting really big. The last few days, I've noticed he sometimes shakes his head side to side. Is he just trying to get used to the weight of his wattles, or what? Is this normal behavior for this stage of development? Will post some pics when I download them off my camera.

I have 3 girls that are 5 1/2 months old. An Easter Egger and 2 Red Sexlinks............... Not a single egg yet.
Could I be doing something wrong? Seems strange that all 3 would be "late bloomers"
They are in a commercial coop for up to 4 chickens with a 10'x3' run attached. Feeding them layers feed, ACV in water (with the mother), I toss in cilantro, basil and marigold flowers once in awhile. they love the treats.

I think that is normal behavior. I see my males doing that, too. Is he shaking his head kind of slowly, or very rapidly? Mine do it in a slow, methodical motion. Not sure what it means in chicken language.
