Arizona Chickens

Hi everyone. Wanted to check in. Been very busy getting settled in and adjusting. Still working on the Cow/Pig thing as well. Saving for the meat hasn't gone as well as planned lol. My continuing medical issues aren't speeding things up at all either and pull away from other funds. ER visits are $250 on our plan, so that eats away at a bank account pretty fast.

I do get to read a lot of the posts still just can't reply. Hope everyone is doing well.

@City farm our 2 little cross breed Jungle Fowl are doing great.

@moms3cuties Penny is doing great NOW. A few days after we spoke about Penny last time she got hurt pretty bad. I don't know what happened but she sliced her right front underarm open pretty bad. I cleaned and wrapped and kept her inside a few days. Kept treating her and she is back 100%. We love her.

Thank you both again.

This is our famous Clair..

Clair is beautiful, what kind of chicken is she?

Mille Fleur d'Uccle bantam..

@K9Dave I resemble what you are saying well. While I've had a chance to feed the girls a little treat or two the standing up thing doesn't last long and I'm off for a chair before I break in two (or so I think!!).........not fun.......just plain not fun. Hang in there.......all will catch up before you know it. I'm loving the pics you all...........

What a cutie!

I know some people live in areas where they can't have roosters due to noise issues, but I love to hear my boys crow!

I've noticed (in my limited experience), that my roos have favorite girls. They will go to them first and if the girl isn't receptive, then they go to someone else. Most of the time the favored girl is receptive, but not always. Maybe it's love... :)

@CityFarm Here is a picture of one of the three EE mixes. She is the broody mom for my NN FM first generation. Other were born but the moms crushed them and it don't matter because they did't make the grade as they did not have the dark skin like I am aiming to make.

Dark skinned Naked neck chick.

I want to add that the other hens form you @Cityfarm look just like the one that I posted except the one that is larger has a pretty crest. They make nice pale green eggs and are not friendly until they become moms and get used to me feeding them in a separate area. I do not have time to carry around my birds. I have too many anyway.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone !

So, It's that time of year again. I went down to our local park and picked up a coffee can full of black acorns. Not sure of the exact species, but these are from a desert climate adapted white oak tree. I started some last year, and the one that has made it this far is over 24" tall now. Not sure who has the seed box right now, but when it makes it's way back to Tucson, I'll throw a bunch of acorns in.

The four chuckoo Maran chicks and the two guinea chicks are spending their first night outside tonight. They're in the Bantam coop with Frizzell and covered in about three blankets

Placing young birds outside is the hardest thing for me to do. I worry CONSTANTLY about them, even dreaming about for the first few nights. When I moved my Australorps outside to the coop I was convinced I wake up the next morning to four dead birds. Instead, they're thriving. I'm working on conditioning my Barred Rocks and Silkies right now. I moved them from the warm office in my house, to the chilly garage with very little heat supplied by a light + allowing them outside with no heat lamp during the day (contained in their brooder). Tomorrow I'm moving them to the coop in the morning so they can spend the day out there with the Australorps, and probably adding a heat light and letting them sleep there tomorrow night. By the end of the week the lamp will be gone and they'll be on their own...and I won't sleep.
