Arizona Chickens

I'm glad to find out you use this feed! I just ordered 150 lbs of the stuff to give a try...but down in Tucson, not Phoenix. I'm finishing off some other food and will start blending the two next week to acclimate the chickens to the change. I don't know if this is necessary to do or not, but I'm in the habit of doing it whenever I have to change my dogs' feed, so it's kind of second nature to do it with my chickens too.

I have been using it almost two years now; once I had to buy some at the feed store because I miscalculated my needs. Chickens stood around looking at it and looking at me, then look at the feed, then look at me, like "what the H=== is this SH==?" They wouldn't hardly touch it.

I get the kind with fish meal; I really think it makes a big difference in feathering and egg production to have the animal protein in there.

the kids and I are doing a fire out back, a neighbor gave us some juniper. It's not the alligator bark juniper, I'm so bummed it has no smell. If anybody ever gets a hold of alligator park juniper please let me know

My chicken Coop Arrived & build

Nice! Looks like you got a well shaded area for it too.

Are these fully feathered yet?
DH wants his garage back. They said they were 1 week old when we got them. that's the 1st pic.
So that would make them just 4 weeks old now. They seem a little bigger than 4 weeks to me.
Hope you can tell by the last 2 pics if it's ok to put them outside yet.
I can still put a heat light on them at night if you think it's ok to put them out. They will be next to the house and not in the middle of the yard. AND in a separate coop from the 3 adult girls of which 1 has now given me 12 eggs and the other 2 are still zip at 7 1/2 months.

Looks like a bit of chick fuzz on the heads and necks. They will do fine if they have a warm area to move in and out of on colder days and at night. Just reduce the distance of the heat source as the grow accustomed.

Your set-up looks nice. To protect from aerial predators, we used camo cloth - not only does it hide the chickens from the predators, it also gives them some shade.
Do you mean camo netting or cloth with camo print on it?

Yeah we had to do that a couple of times. It's harder to ferment some of the feeds out there but the Big Sky mash does not get gummy. Love it and so do the girls.

That's why I wanted to try it too! I've spent the past 15 years studying human nutrition to the point of being almost obsessed with what our food industry has done. When I finally decided it was time to make the move to get chickens, I told my husband I didn't want them to eat any corn, soy, or canola based upon what I'd learned about both the evolution of the chicken and the commercialization and utilization of cheap feed, and wanted the chickens to get actual meat protein instead of relying on plant fillers. For me it's not just about collecting eggs outside my backdoor, but about getting out what I put into it...good, healthy feed = healthier chickens = healthier us.

that's wonderful, I'm going to go pick up some Modesto Mills feed crumbles and pellets from @Timskins up in surprise anybody want anything?

Modesto Mills is what @desertMarcy uses for her chickens and it's an organic feed without the corn soy or canola in it but they do have some you can buy some organic soy in the feed.

The girls are finally in their new home. In all, they seem happy. Bought this coop from San Tan Coops, DH made a few modifications and additions. We still want :)to do a couple more modifications. :yiipchick
