Arizona Chickens

@houdiniduck have you set egg's??
not yet. I got some beautiful eggs from @ChuskaMtns today (shout out girly, it was nice to meet you, sorry I couldn't chat more, work was rough today!) They are golden cuckoo marans, English orpingtons and I forgot the other two. What were they? I am getting a couple more eggs from another guy tomorrow, Buff laced polish (squeeee, my dream chicken) so I will set everything tomorrow after I get the polish eggs. I got the turner in and filled up the water channels to bump the humidity, it was real low. We shall see where it sits later tonight and tomorrow as I had rocks in there last time I checked the temp, so I have to see where the temp goes now that I took out the rocks. (yeah, i know rocks?! they were holding the wire.) I am nervous to the MAX and I haven't even started!

Disregard the tools and catnip, this is the catch all table, brooder table and the office storage dresser... My son should be excited on sunday when he sees the incubator and eggs.

I wish I would of got some quail egg's from you for the New Years Eve party ths evening...
They were a huge hit last year..

Any time! Just let me know.

Never mind, see that you're in Mesa. I do get into Mesa a lot these days if you want me to drop them off. I tend to go to Bookmans and/or The Fiber Factory on W. Main and somehow end up blowing most of my day between the 2.
Bookman's is one of my favorite places!

Agh, you reminded me of my moringa from @Sill .. Just ran out and it is fine..

The other from @Gallo del Cielo we will have to wait and see.. In order to transport from Tucson, it was cut to fit into my car. Hope it made it from last night freeze.. It was under a tree with running water.. No pipe's bursting here. Had them all on a trickle..
. Now that our van is done I will be able to put more plant's or chickens...

Remember, even if the top of your moringa freezes it will come back from the roots once it warms up. So don't throw it out if it does freeze! Just make sure you got enough mulch over the pot so the roots don't freeze. Moringa doesn't grow in winter, it just exists, but once the temps go up there is no stopping a moringa tree! They grow super fast in the heat!

I cut my big one down to about 4 foot high before the real cold hit so I wouldn't loose the foliage for fodder. It's all been dehydrated, powdered and put into a couple of jars to use mostly to top dress the birds' fermented feed a couple of times a week but I'll use some myself. My DH remarked how that big tree's worth of leaves fit into two jars once it had been processed. Takes up way less space! I'm hoping it lasts until I can get more leaves in the spring.

@Sill What do these moringas look like and do you have any available? I take it the chickens like it? I am looking for plant ideas for in the run, I would like to make it prettier than bare dirt for them, but I don't know what to put in there that they wont just destroy.

I like the name banshee.
thanks she was the chicken i got when i got back into chickens,i had a large flock when i was little at my grandparents house but when they moved the birds got integrated into my great grandfathers flock, when my grandparents got me banshee they only got her, and my grandma said if it turned out to be a rooster it would be food she was very loud all by herself. then i got polly from their neighbor and a few months later i got the rest (minus blackbeard who i got a few months after that) from my great grandfather prettygirl is the descendant of one of my hens from the past and i let my sister name the silkie hens.. i chose to spell them differently...

They look like this close up when they flower.

Sorry I don't have any photos of the trees, but you can google them and find plenty. They would be great for the chicken's run if you grow one up high enough that they can't easily pick all the foliage off. It's easy to keep them trimmed down to easy picking height, or you can let them grow up tall. Its your choice. I will say I did let my oldest tree get too high. It was difficult to harvest leaves which is the main reason to keep one. I'll try to keep it shorter this year.

The birds all will eat it, but some will take a while to develop a taste for it as it can have a strong flavor, sort of a mild horse radish taste. It's milder in younger leaves, open blossoms and dried foliage.

Moringa will grow from seeds or cuttings. I gave away all my cuttings from by big tree, but I'll have more the next time I cut one down. Still waiting to get seeds from any of mine. I get plenty of blossoms, but no seed pods yet.

I wish I knew why! There are moringa seeds in the seed box so when it comes around again near us get some seeds to start. They grow super quick and you'll have a 5 foot plus tree in less than a year.
