Arizona Chickens

That is awesome! I converted my old shed into a chicken coop. I've been watching CL looking for a dog kennel to make into a chicken run or some 6x6 chain link panels.

My husband told me a few days ago that I need to get a "few more" hens. Right now I have 6 roosters more than I need. They are 12 weeks old so I will either sell/give them away or they will go to freezer camp. I chose one to keep. They aren't allowed here if they can crow, but I'm gonna try to collar him while he's still young and hopefully he won't ever be a problem. So when everything is settled, I will have 15 hens and 1 rooster. I think that's more than enough.....I'm planning on sharing eggs with my husband's parents too. And possibly even other relatives.

I wouldn't even know what other breed to try. I have 4 easter eggers, 5 buff orpingtons, and 6 slow white broilers. Right now one of the white hens is the dominant hen. She even bosses the roosters around, but they are still young. I know the broilers are meant for eating, but I kept the hens because my kids loved them. I guess we will see how well they lay. If not, I'll send them to the freezer after a bit. I've researched them a bit and they lay brown eggs.

Not chicken related...but if anybody in the Phoenix area is in need of a nice dining table plus 6 chairs plus 2 end tables: my partner's step mother died recently and they are getting down to the wire trying to clear out the house since it has been sold and closes on the 15th. They are asking $400 for the table, chairs and end tables. Excellent condition---the table has 3 leafs which make it a nice long 9' table or if you don't want it that long, take out one or all of the leafs. There is a bunch of other misc. stuff that has to go as well, kitchen plates, glasses, a couch, chair, long set of drawers...not sure what all is left, I was up there on Saturday and filled my truck with "stuff"

Here are pics of the table, chairs, end tables...the house is near Glendale and 15th Ave....call them if you are interested 602-995-4215 but don't wait.

I started with 10 hatchery stock...Australorps, Barred Rocks and Silkies. Now I have 18 NN Turken eggs in the incubator that I'm hoping to raise for meat and eggs, and I hope to acquire at least a dozen Bielefelder eggs in the very near future to raise for both meat and eggs. I also plan to breed both the NNs and the Biels. When my hubby and I started talking about having chickens he said something about "four chickens will be enough". Uh huh. Yesterday when we were looking at the runs and coops online he was the one saying, "Look! That one will accommodate up to 48!" So now I've got a coop + run we built for my current 10 chickens, plus the coop+run we have on order, and we're in the process of cleaning out our shed to convert that to another coop as well. I think my obsession might be infecting him too!

I will take a look at the site sometime and see if it's a place I want to order from. I don't know if they breed to American poultry standards or if they are just considered a hatchery?

...... @desertmarcy do you have americaunas? please forgive the spelling and do you know anything about McMurray?

Very Eggciting ladies!!! =D

My MIL made my bare hens sweater saddles! She wants to sell them too, 20 dollars for one. Does that sound like a fair price?
very cute! :) :love I think maybe 20 might be okay for one, for me a little high. I would suggest maybe if they bought more than one, maybe offer 10 or 12 dollars each if you buy more than one, but it's just my suggestion and that's not knowing how much Work went to those for her to make them.

Murray McMurray is a huge hatchery. No, they don't breed to APA standards. You can read a lot of reviews here http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/4869/
From such a huge company, you would expect a lot of negatives as well as positive reviews. This site has 87 positives to 40 negatives, plus 19 neutral reviews. That seems like a lot of negatives to me. My first poultry I purchased came from them, back in 2008. I didn't have any problems with the order. But I've heard from people who have had horrible problems with them and would never order from them again. So I guess you take your chances.

Yes, I am currently breeding the blue-black-splash color of Ameraucanas. There is no "i" in Ameraucana if it is the pure breed. I am not sure how long I'm going to keep them, their size is not meeting my expectation but the eggs are light blue. I have a male over my pullets that is unrelated to them. I may see how the offspring of this cross come out or I may decide to scrap the project. I am on the fence right now. I do want to keep some blue egg layers, of a breed that is in the SOP that I can show. I really like the buff color, but good buff Ameraucanas are rare as hen's teeth.
