Arizona Chickens

Hello all! I had the best, most friendly and curious hen named Beverly who passed away a couple weeks ago and I am heartbroken. I didn't want to have any more chickens for a while after her but a rogue chicken showed up in a neighbors yard just a couple days after Beverly passed and who else to ask catch her but the crazy chicken lady! So I scooped her up and she reminds me so much of Beverly it's very eery! I have no idea what she is (bantam something is all I know) but she is warming up to me and even has rode one shoulder for a bit after a good amount of coaxing.
Anyways so now I have a chicken (never found her original owners) but I want a friend or four for her to hang with. I have my heart set on naked necks (Turkens) but I have no idea where to get them from. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them

Looks like I'm going to have a lot of extra Black Java cockerels over the next several weeks. Not sure if I will have any pullets. The oldest chicks are about 2 months old now. The youngest are still in their eggs. These will be backyard quality birds that look like generic black chickens. They are not necessarily representative of their breed and they are definitely not show quality birds due to various color and conformation faults. (I will be keeping the ones that are most representative of the breed.) Available birds will be mostly black birds with a green sheen when the light hits them. Black Javas are an old American class large fowl breed that nearly went extinct. A number of my birds are from an old line that needs work; hence all the conformation faults. The birds in my avatar are all Black Javas.

Black Javas are dual purpose birds. They are generally good foragers. My birds tolerate calm people but are not super-friendly because they have not been raised as pets. Most of my older birds have been trained to come to treats. If you want a great backyard bird that isn't a lap chicken, it's hard to go wrong with a black java.

If you are planning on using the cockerels for meat birds, the breast meat is slow to develop. They have mostly leg meat until they are 10-12 months old. The meat has a lot of flavor, even after several hours of stewing.

There are a few birds I could let go soon. I'm asking $10/bird. They have been raised mostly on Big Sky organic chick starter/grower. I'm southwest of Tucson, about 20 minutes from I-19/Ajo.

my trio of silver penciled bantam rocks, I also have a buff silkier hen with them what colors might I get from that cross? Does anybody know if silver ameraucanas have the same color genetics as silver penciled or are they completely different genes?

Good morning all. Getting ready for the impending storm due to hit here tonight. My daughter called and said it is snowing in Flagstaff. So far in Kingman it is just cold and windy. Here is a couple photos of my current egg bird they are the Barred Rocks with the RI Roo and meat bird breeding stock are the Barred Rocks and Cornish hen with a Dark Cornish Roo. My RI Roo is still young and does not have his feathers all in but he is a lover just the same. He will run full blast to me when he sees me and the stand there waiting to be picked up.:yiipchick Just set 20 black copper Maran eggs ~ and 18 White Maran eggs hoping for a good hatch. I have Lavender Maran eggs on the way. Will be doing lavender and coral blue Guinea eggs in a month or so waiting for the breeding season on the birds I am after. BTW if anyone has a lead on Mearn quail let me know ty

Good to hear from you.. There is a lady in Phoenix that has a ton of quail.. If I remember what her company name is I will post.. She has a rescue of quail...

Yeah, no whole foods here, but maybe next time my husband goes to PHX I'll hitch a ride that way I can nab some duckweed and grapefruit seed extract at the same time! All this talk of hatching chicks makes me want more chickens. I'm already at the max I can have.

I do have a noisy rooster who might have to go away if I can't find a way to make him more quiet. He woke me up at 5:30 AM, the sun wasn't even up. I grabbed him off the roost, stuffed him in a dog crate, and covered him with blankets. He was quiet until I let him out. I tried tightening his no crow collar more but its difficult for me to do. I think I'm going to get my husband to help me tighten it more before tomorrow and I'll keep in the crate until we can get him muted. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to give him away.

We tightened our boy's collar as well. He is still kind of loud.. So we did exactly what you have done.. Once he is up with his girl's, I take him and put him in a small cage, cover him with stuff.. Kind of works..

I'm a little sad. My husband and I decided to give away my sweet, docile Buff Orpington rooster. He just started crowing regularly a few days ago. He's just over 4 months. I'm not allowed to have a crowing rooster in town so I will be finding him a home. We weren't comfortable with him wearing a no crow collar. Plus it hadn't worked that well on him. I put him in a dog crate in my back room to keep him a little quieter. He's sad and lonely. I feel horrible.

Well, the inevitable finally happened.  An egg leaked in my incubator.  I had been noticing a yucky smell in the bathroom where the incubator is but didn't think to look IN the incubator for the source.  Duh.  Thought the bathtub drain trap had dried out again and the sewer smell was the cause of the odor.  It happens a couple of times a year.  Nope.  This time it's the incubator.

The blasted egg dripped all over the turner, so I have to figure out how to keep 30+ eggs warm and more or less in position for however long it takes me to disassemble, scrub and sanitize the incubator then get it set up again.  Going to be a long and stinky night.



Hope the other eggs are not contaminated. They weren't in direct contact with the yucky stuff. 

I did not look when you posted. Go stick them under some of your girl's, for just a bit...

Ty I am looking for a specific breed called mearn don't think I spelled that right hope she has some. I can drive to Pheonix no problem

Agh, she looks like a jungle fowl or welsumer. I'll post photos of our jungle fowl in a bit..
