Arizona Chickens

5 out of 5 of my Porter Bronze turkey hatching eggs hatched! I'm still waiting on the Black turkeys. Those eggs took a rough ride for some reason. 5 of the 10 were completely scrambled from shipping. The remaining 5 started developing kind of slowly, so I think they are behind the others and there is still hope they will hatch. They aren't officially due until tomorrow. These are my first Bronze turkeys. They are heritage Bronze, not broad-breasted, from Frank Reese (Good Shepard) line but Kevin Porter sent them to me. Frank Reese no longer sells to the public so I feel fortunate to get these.

For just hatched chicks in the brooder in this weather, do you provide an option for a light or an EcoGlow during the day? It is hotter outside than is supposed be in the brooder, right? What time do you turn the light on? Or at what temp?

Hi I'm looking for a no kill home for my pair of black Wyandotte's ( hen and rooster) I raised them from chicks and they are beautiful , tame and very good natured. Unfortunately my HOA is making me get rid of them. They need to be rehiomed together because they are inseparable! Please let me know if your interested or you know someone who is!

Thanks, Liz

A lot depends on your brooder design and location. I would get one of those reptile thermostats for the Ecoglow or heat lamp and have it turn on whenever the temp goes below whatever temperature the chick behavior indicates is comfortable for them. At this time of year I would start at 80 and go down from there. In the winter, start at 90-95. You don't want to cook the chicks in this heat. On the other hand, the nights are still cool enough a little heat might be necessary. Don't forget to drop the temperature several degrees every few days.

Good luck!

Is the thermostat based upon the ambient temperature or the temperature of the device?

I brood on my shaded patio, in a large dog kennel. For the first 3 weeks, I turn on the heat lamp once it's full dark.
